Housecalls for the Homeless - Upstate

Housecalls for the Homeless - Upstate Housecalls for the Homeless – Upstate is a community-based street medicine program out of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

We facilitate healthcare access to the most marginalized populations, specifically to those experiencing homelessness. Housecalls for the Homeless - Upstate is a street medicine program co-founded by Dr. David Lehmann and Mia Ruiz-Salvador in the summer of 2018. This program provides direct medical care to individuals living on the streets of Syracuse, in partnership with In My Father’s Kitchen. T

he program also provides direct and consultative services for the following non-profit agencies that provide shelter in Central New York:
- Rescue Mission
- Salvation Army Women’s Shelter
- Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter
- Chadwick Residence

Working with local support services, we provide treatment of infections, dressing of small wounds, footcare, vaccines, and can initiate suboxone therapy while bridging individuals to addiction services. Chronic conditions such as hypertension, COPD, and diabetes are monitored, and individuals receive counseling on how to manage their care. All medical services are provided entirely free-of-charge to our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness.

Alongside our IMFK partners, Hannah spent the day witnessing both the harsh realities of substance use disorder and the power of compassionate care. She comforted a woman experiencing homelessness after the heartbreaking loss of her friend to a likely fentanyl-laced “spike,” learned about treating a serious finger injury, and helped care for another community member by cleaning and dressing painful foot wounds. With fresh socks and shoes provided by the IMFK team, moments like these remind us that healing starts with compassion, dignity, and human connection.

With help from our IMFK partners, they also arranged clean clothing, including underwear, socks, and pants, and assisted in setting up access to weekly showers at a local facility.
