Our club would like to extend our sincere thanks to Teresa Sumner and Amy Cummings for being our guests at last week's meeting.

Mrs. Sumner, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Worth County School System, shared information about the Reading is "Worth" It! campaign, which is working to strengthen early childhood learning and literacy for children ages 0–5. She also introduced Basics Insights, a free text messaging program that provides parents and caregivers with science-based tips to support their child's development. Mrs. Cummings, Graduation Specialist, spoke about Check & Connect, an evidence-based K–12 mentoring program that pairs trained mentors with students to monitor attendance, behavior, and academics while providing timely support and strengthening home-school partnerships. The program has already shown tremendous success, with participating students achieving a 95% graduation rate from Worth County High School.

We are grateful to these dedicated leaders for their commitment to helping the children and students of our community learn, grow, and succeed. Thank you for sharing your time and the important work you do.

Our club recently donated stuffed animals to the Margaret Jones Public Library for its "Stuffed Animal Bingo" event, part of the library's summer reading program. The library provides many valuable services and opportunities for our community, and we are proud to support its efforts to encourage reading, learning, and fun for local families. Thank you MJPL for all you do!

The Kiwanis Club of Sylvester remembers Mr. Fred Dent. He was a dedicated member, past president, and a true servant leader in our community whose impact will be felt for generations.

From his days as an educator and coach to his decades of leadership in business and public service, Fred devoted his life to strengthening Worth County and investing in its people. Whether supporting youth through education, athletics, and the Boy Scouts, or guiding our county forward through his direction and vision, he embodied the spirit of service that Kiwanis stands for.

Fred was a mentor, a friend, and a steady presence to so many. He will be greatly missed. His commitment to community, his wisdom, and his willingness to serve wherever needed set a strong and lasting example for us all.

We are deeply grateful for his years of service and for the lasting legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Kiwanis Club of Sylvester honors and remembers the life of our friend and fellow servant leader, Jim “Jimbo” Houston.

Jim was more than an educator at Worth County High School — he was a constant source of encouragement, laughter, and guidance to generations of students. As the advisor to the Key Club, he poured his heart into shaping young leaders, instilling in them the values we hold dear: service, leadership, and a commitment to making our community better.

We remember his words shared with us last year — that Key Club members “don’t seek glory for the things we do — we do it because it’s the right thing to do.” That truth reflected the way Jim lived his life every day.

For nearly three decades, Jim built meaningful relationships that went far beyond the classroom. He had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and inspired. Whether he was organizing student events, supporting school activities, or simply sharing a laugh in the hallway, his impact was profound and lasting.

His loss is deeply felt across our community, but his legacy lives on in the countless students he mentored and the lives he touched.

We extend our heartfelt prayers to his family, friends, colleagues, and the students of Worth County High School.

Once a Ram, always a Ram. And for us — once a friend, always a friend.

🎨✨ Join Us for the Kiwanis Local Art Showcase! 🎨

For over 40 years, the Georgia District of Kiwanis has celebrated the incredible talents of students across the state—and now it’s time to support our local high school artists right here in Sylvester!

We invite our community to come out and view amazing artwork created by talented students in grades 9–12 as they compete in our local showcase. First-place winners from each grade, along with an overall winner, will advance to the District competition.

🕓 Doors open to the public at 4:00 PM

🎉 Viewing available throughout the evening (event concludes by 8:00 PM)

Thank you to everyone who helped organize and support the Pets & Pals Parade and Fall Festival.

We had a great time taking part in the Trunk-or-Treat event and enjoyed seeing so many families and creative costumes. It was also a joy to give away a kick scooter to one of our awesome trick-or-treaters.

We appreciate all who made this community event possible!
