Kosgei Represents CWA at 2023 Marine Corp Marathon

Isaiah Kosgei, an elite Kenyan athlete from Iten, Kenya will be running for CWA in the 2023 Marine Corp Marathon. A 2:09 marathoner, Kosgei is excited to be lacing up his sneakers to run his first marathon in the USA. After months of hard training, he is excited and up for the challenge of taking on 26.2 miles around the streets of the USA capital, Washington D.C to raise money and awareness for CWA’s newly launched Female Athlete Scholarship Program.
Targeting talented, female athletes from Kenya, the program provides 4-year scholarships for girls who otherwise would not be able to afford to attend High School, helping them to pursue both their athletic and academic dreams. Headed up by international athlete, Betsy Saina, the program will include tuition, mentors, workshops, coaching, menstrual health education and post-secondary goal setting for either college or a trade.
Kosgei shared how, ‘This makes me happy and proud to partner and race for the Cross World Africa Organisation as an ambassador at the Marine Corp Marathon to give them an opportunity to support as many families in Africa and Kenya and make Hope a Reality’.
The 2023 Marine Corp Marathon will be the flagship fundraiser, which Kosgei sees as a great opportunity to not just raise money but also hopes to challenge the veteran’s marathon world record.
Our goal is to raise funds for 50 scholarships of, on average $500 per student although any level of donation is most welcome. CWA remains a 501(c)3, USA-based not-for-profit who is managed by volunteers since 2007. Donations are 100% eligible for tax deduction. We would appreciate your donation through the CWA website (www.crossworldafrica.org) or by check to ‘Cross World Africa’ using the address: P.O. Box 1792– Sylvania, Georgia 30467.

Cross World Africa 2.0

October 2023

Cross World Africa is excited to share the new vision (“2.0”) that is being launched in October 2023 in coordination with the Marine Corps Marathon fundraiser. Outlined below is a brief overview of the CWA2.0 administration, programs and plans as we head into 2024.

During the summer of 2023 we shared the success of the programming which included the Livestock, Seamstress, Menstrual Health, Academic Scholarships, Barber and Food Programs and Football Challenge Cup. The details of the program impact have previously been shared but can also be found on the website. Upon reflection of the program goals and internal changes needed to meet them, I returned as Executive Director to launch the new vision and plans for the future.

In 2023, CWA launched a Student-Athlete Secondary School Program which included 10 girls and 3 boys. The scholarship students were highly selective and based upon their application, recommendations, grades, athleticism, and financial need. With support from former and current elite Kenyan runners, we created this program to provide long-term support with local mentors. Since many Kenyan families have limited resources, typically education is encouraged for male members of the family over the females. The 2024 CWA Student-Athlete Program will only include girls who have been successful through primary school and are being considered for day or boarding secondary school. The 4-year scholarship will include tuition, mentors, workshops, coaching, menstrual health education and post-secondary goal setting for either college or a trade. The students on the college track will obtain 6-weeks of college prep including preparation of the application, scholastic aptitude test practice and a running camp. Families of the Student-Athletes will be expected to participate in annual program meetings and provide a percentage of the school fees on a sliding scale.

We are fortunate to have Betsy Saina launch the 2023 inaugural class and will lead the 2024 – 2028 CWA Student-Athlete Program. Betsy Saina is a wife, mother, Asics-sponsored Kenyan athlete, and American Citizen who won the 2018 Paris Marathon and the 2023 Sydney (Australia) Marathon. In September 2023, Betsy was inducted into the Iowa State University Hall of Fame. Betsy has numerous awards, but her passion is also to help young Kenyan Women to achieve. CWA is actively seeking other elite Kenyan Women runners to serve as mentor volunteers.

In order to fortify the 2024CWA Student-Athlete Program, we are using the October 30, 2023, Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC as the flagship fundraiser. We are fortunate to have Isaiah Kosgei, a great friend of mine, agree to raise funds for CWA this fall. Isaiah is an elite Kenyan runner from Iten, Kenya who is a sub-2-hour 20- minute marathon runner. There are other friends of CWA who will also participate in the marathon or 10-K (6.2 mile) fundraisers. Our goal is to raise enough funds for 50 4-year scholarships which, on average, will be $500 per student. Any level of donation is most welcome.

🐄🌾 Empowering Futures, Phase Five of Our Livestock Project 🌾

With hearts filled with gratitude and a sense of accomplishment, we have successfully concluded Phase Five, the final chapter of our transformative livestock project in the Kenyan Rift Valley. This time, our journey led us to the vibrant village of Kipture, where we were embraced with a warm welcome and a promise of transformation.

In this last phase, we made a significant impact by donating 20 cows and 25 sheep to the deserving families of Kipture. Each animal represents not only a source of sustenance but also a symbol of hope and resilience. We firmly believe that through these livestock projects, we have paved the way for a brighter future for all our beneficiaries.

Together, we have laid the foundation for a transformative future , where self-sufficiency and prosperity thrive. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our donors, whose unwavering support and belief in our mission have made all of this possible. Your contributions have transformed lives and inspired hope in the hearts of many.

In addition to our ongoing efforts, we are proud to announce that our Kenyan team will soon embark on a new venture. We will be launching our first livestock project in Lodwar, Turkana County—a region deeply affected by aridity and challenging environmental conditions. Through this initiative, we aim to bring hope, prosperity, and sustainable solutions to one of Northern Kenya's most arid areas.

As we bring our donations to a close, our dedicated Kenyan team will continue their invaluable work. They will be conducting follow-ups and providing essential training on livestock care, ensuring that our beneficiaries are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for long-term success. Their commitment to the well-being of these animals and the empowerment of the community is unwavering.

🐄🌾 Transforming Lives, Phase Four of Our Livestock Project 🌾🐄

Yesterday, we embarked on the highly anticipated Phase Four of our livestock project in Tindiret, Nandi County. It was a day filled with joy, celebration and the undeniable spirit of unity. We took a significant step towards changing lives and creating a brighter future for this remarkable community.

With immense pride, we donated 42 cows and 29 sheep to the deserving families of Tindiret. These animals are more than just livestock; they represent a pathway to prosperity and self-reliance. Nandi County”s climate, characterized by vast highlands, provides an ideal environment for thriving hybrid dairy cattle. The milk produced will nourish families and serve as a valuable source of income for their daily needs, including school fees and other essential requirements.

From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in the vibrant rhythm of traditional Nandi dances, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of this remarkable community. Their warm welcome and gracious hospitality were further exemplified by the presentation of conventional attire and the Maasai beaded sticks, symbols of appreciation and friendship.

Together, we have sparked a transformation that reaches far beyond the animals we donated. We have ignited hope, empowered families, and strengthened the bonds of community. This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support and generosity of our incredible donors. Your contributions have changed lives and made a lasting impact on Tindiret.

🐄🌾 Transforming Lives, Phase Three of our Livestock Project 🌾🐄

Today marked a significant milestone in our livestock project as we embarked on Phase Three at Kapkangani. With hearts brimming with excitement, we donated 5 cows, 20 sheep, and 250 chickens to the deserving families of this vibrant community. It was a day filled with joy, laughter, and the promise of a brighter future.

From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in the warmth of Kapkangani's hospitality. The community welcomed us with open arms, adorning us with traditional Nandi attire and hats. Their spirited traditional dances resonated through the air, celebrating the deep-rooted culture and heritage of the Nandi people.

As the livestock found their new homes, we witnessed the hope and potential they brought to these families. These animals are not just a source of sustenance; they are pathways to financial stability and self-sufficiency. Each cow, sheep, and chicken represents an opportunity for these families to thrive, to generate income, and to build a better future.

Together, let us preserve the flame of tradition while embracing progress and empowerment. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our incredible donors, whose unwavering support enables us to create lasting change in Kenyan communities. 💜🩸 Empowering Young Girls, Breaking Taboos 🩸💜

CWA believes that education is the key to empowerment. Our most recent project focused on an important but often overlooked aspect of women's health: menstrual health. We conducted comprehensive training sessions for young girls at Mindililwo Primary School, providing them with essential knowledge and resources to confidently embrace their menstrual cycles.

In partnership with Bates College Project for Peace recipients, we discussed menstrual hygiene practices, the importance of proper sanitation, and debunking myths surrounding menstruation. We encouraged open and honest discussions, breaking down taboos and fostering a supportive environment for these young girls.

In line with our commitment to their well-being, we provided sanitary pads to each participant. These essential resources will ensure that they can manage their menstrual health comfortably and hygienically, allowing them to pursue their academic dreams without any hindrance.

Together, we are rewriting the narrative around menstrual health, empowering young girls to embrace their bodies and face each cycle with strength and dignity. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our compassionate donors, whose generosity made this project a reality. Your support directly impacts the lives of these girls, providing them with the tools they need to thrive.

🌟 "Periods are not a problem, but a sign of a healthy body."🌟

The event was also broadcast on KASSTV

We welcome all those who are passionate about supporting menstrual health and advocating for gender equality to join our cause. Together, we can ensure that every young girl has access to proper menstrual education and resources, paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

"Sports have the power to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

At CWA, we believe in the transformative power of sports and the development of talents. Over the weekend, we organized an exhilarating elementary school soccer competition in Iten, the esteemed home of champions. The weekend-long event showcased the incredible abilities of these young talents, providing them with a platform to shine.

With full soccer gear, every participant exuded passion and determination on the field. It was a sight to behold as they demonstrated their skills and embraced the spirit of healthy competition. We are proud to have witnessed their growth and potential firsthand.

In celebration of their achievements, outstanding students and winners were honoured with a multitude of awards. The ultimate glory was bestowed upon the overall school winner, who proudly lifted the prestigious Cross World Africa Cup. This triumph serves as a stepping stone for them, as they prepare for upcoming sports competitions in Kenya.

We are empowering these young minds together, steering them away from inactivity, and drug and substance abuse now and in the future. We are grateful to our incredible donors, whose unwavering support makes projects like this a reality. Your generosity has a significant impact on the lives of African communities, and we encourage you to continue to be a catalyst for change.
