We are incredibly proud of our CEO, Margaret Morton, and the work of SAFE & EARTH being recognized as part of Alabama’s growing innovation movement during Innovation Day at the Capitol 2026.

For nearly 30 years, SAFE has worked to strengthen families and communities in Sylacauga, and now the EARTH initiative is helping shape the future of rural workforce development, entrepreneurship, and innovation across East Alabama.

As Margaret shared, “Rural Alabama is not waiting to be included in the future — Rural Alabama is helping build it.”

Thank you to Innovate Alabama for highlighting the impact happening right here in our community and for investing in partnerships that create opportunities for generations to come.

Twice each month, our families and children come together for hands-on learning experiences in our SAFE Community Garden. Through fun and interactive activities, children are learning about planting, healthy foods, composting, harvesting, nature, and where our food comes from — all while making memories together.
From making homemade ice cream and tasting fresh foods from the garden to creating crowns from sweet potato vines, every meeting is filled with creativity, laughter, and learning. Recently, our families explored the story The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree and participated in activities like raking leaves for mulch, crafting wreaths from pear tree prunings, learning how to peel apples, and making bird feeders for garden wildlife.
We are so proud of the curiosity, teamwork, and excitement our children bring to each session. These experiences are helping our families connect, learn, and grow together — one garden lesson at a time.
A huge thank you to everyone who helps make these group meetings possible!
