As was reported in the Coosa County News two weeks ago unless someone can take over the shelter with a new team the shelter will close by the end of this month. It became obvious very quickly that the shelter required paid qualified individuals to ensure the daily needs of the shelter were met.
Our funding was not sufficient to pay employees and able-bodied volunteers could not be scheduled on a reliable daily basis.
Secondly no kill shelters do fantastic work but they are currently being overrun as their rescue outlets are at capacity. So to ,our kennel facility was overwhelmed in the first two weeks with 45 animals and no slow down or stoppage in site .
When we announced we were at capacity they were left at our doorstep.
This pressure was mentally and physically draining.
The announcement of the closure by Dennis and this team was difficult but necessary.
Difficult because of the overwhelming support we have received from the citizens of Coosa County at all levels.
It is hoped the intact shelter can find a use soon if not as something pretaining to the welfare of animals.
It is our opinion that shelters need help at the state level with laws and enforcement to go after the irresponsible and heartless people that drop these dogs off on our roads . Many states address this problem by requiring a yearly purchase of a license to own a pet plus mandatory spay and neuter.
Enforcement is necessary.
Currently our rabies officer for Coosa County cannot inspect on site due to trespassing laws.
We will address our commissioner's in the next couple of weeks and our state representative Ben Robbins to take our example and wish for state help in this battle.
Thank you again for all your support and keep us in your prayers.
