The Town of Sykesville is proud to announce that our new interpretive nature panels along the Sykesville Linear Trail are officially complete and ready for visitors.
This project has been a long time in the making, and seeing each panel finally installed in its frame along the trail is incredibly rewarding.
The six panels were created to help visitors slow down, look more closely, and discover the natural world already surrounding them. Along the way, you can learn about the Cooper’s hawk, the plants and activity beneath your feet, the trees that shape the landscape, the changing seasons, the Patapsco South Branch, and the many sights, sounds, textures, and small details that make the trail special.
More than anything, this project was created as a love letter to Sykesville itself.
Every panel was designed to celebrate the living landscape that already exists here—the trees, water, wildlife, changing seasons, and small moments of discovery that shape our town every day. It was never about placing something new into the landscape simply for the sake of it. It was about helping people notice and appreciate what has been here all along.
Sykesville is filled with natural spaces that hold stories, movement, beauty, and life. We hope these panels encourage residents and visitors to slow down, look a little closer, and feel even more connected to the place we are fortunate to call home.
You may even spot a few words from our trail guide, Sparky, encouraging younger visitors—and the young at heart—to pause, explore, and notice something new.
We are deeply grateful to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for providing the funding that made this project possible. Their support allowed us to create an educational experience that adds value to the trail while encouraging environmental awareness, outdoor learning, and a stronger connection to the natural spaces within our community.
We would also like to thank Shannon-Baum Signsfor their work producing the panels and helping bring the designs to life. The finished signs are vibrant, readable, durable, and beautifully showcase the photographs, artwork, and information included throughout the project.
A huge thank-you also goes to O’Donnell Enterprises, Inc. for the installation work. Each frame, concrete pad, and brick border was carefully placed to create a finished, welcoming space where visitors can safely step off the trail, pause, read, and take in the landscape around them.
Projects like this are only successful because of the many people who contribute their time, knowledge, craftsmanship, support, and patience along the way. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who helped move this idea from early planning and design to the completed trail experience you can now visit.
And now, the best part: the panels are ready for you.
Take a walk along the Sykesville Linear Trail, visit all six locations, and see what catches your attention. Look up into the canopy. Search the forest floor. Listen near the water. Watch for movement in the trees. Notice how the trail changes as you move from one area to the next.
Whether you are visiting with children, walking your dog, enjoying a quiet morning outside, or simply passing through, we hope these panels give you a reason to pause and see the trail in a new way.
We hope this trail experience feels like what it was intended to be: a celebration of Sykesville and an invitation to appreciate the wonderful life growing, moving, and unfolding all around us.
