Hidden Corners of Sykesville Parks

One of the best parts of working in parks is stumbling across little moments that most people walk right past.

A patch of wildflowers tucked along a trail. Sunlight filtering through the trees. A mushroom after a summer rain. The quiet sound of water moving through the creek at Carrie Dorsey Park.

Our parks are often at their busiest during events, movie nights, train rides, and splash pad season—but some of their best features reveal themselves when you slow down and take a closer look.

The next time you're out enjoying one of Sykesville's parks, take a moment to wander a little farther down the trail, look a little closer at the trees, or stop and listen to the sounds around you.

You never know what you might discover.

Park Question of the Week

Sykesville’s parks all have their own personality — splash pad days at Millard Cooper, quiet walks along the trail, train rides at Little Sykes, shaded benches, playground memories, creekside discoveries, and everything in between.

So we want to know:

What is your favorite Sykesville park memory?

Maybe it was a movie night, a first train ride, a cleanup day, a picnic, a walk with your family, or a quiet moment outside.

Share yours in the comments — we’d love to hear what these spaces mean to you.

Tiny Things, Big Discoveries

One of the best things about our parks is that you never know what you'll find if you slow down and take a closer look.

A butterfly landing on a flower.
A bee gathering pollen.
A caterpillar inching across a leaf.
A beetle you've never noticed before.

This week, we invite you to become a backyard naturalist. Take a walk, explore a park, and see what tiny wonders you can find.

You might be surprised how much life is hiding in plain sight.

And if you're looking for a place to start, join us on June 13 for our Community Bug Hunt, Basil the Naturalist, and A Bug's Life at Millard Cooper Park!

What cool creatures have you spotted recently?

A Note to Our Mysterious Park Helper

While making the rounds at Millard Cooper Park this morning, we discovered a curious little collection of treasures gathered neatly on a bench.

Bits of string, shiny confetti, wrappers, and other odds and ends that had somehow found their way around the park had been carefully collected into one spot.

Now, we can't say for certain whether it was the work of a helpful fairy, a hardworking gnome, a nature sprite, or simply a thoughtful young park visitor... but we'd like to say thank you.

Every little act of kindness helps keep our parks beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

So, to our mysterious helper: we noticed, we appreciate it, and we hope your next adventure is a good one.

Thank You for a Great Start to Splash Pad Season!

This past week the weather was absolutely wonderful and we've been thrilled to see so many families enjoying The Splash Pad and Millard Cooper Park this season.

As visitation increases, we'd like to ask for a little help from our park visitors:

🗑️ Please dispose of all trash in designated receptacles
🍕 Please clean up any food, drinks, and picnic items when you're finished
♻️ Help us keep the park clean and welcoming for everyone
🐾 Remember to clean up after your pets

A clean park is a safe, enjoyable park, and we appreciate everyone doing their part to help care for this shared community space.

Thank you for helping us keep Sykesville's parks beautiful!

All Aboard for a Special Open House!

The Sykesville & Patapsco Railway will be opening the doors of their miniature railroad clubhouse for a special Open House on:

- Sunday, June 7
- 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
- Little Sykes Railway Park

Come explore the club's Pullman car filled with miniature trains, learn about the history and operation of miniature railroading, meet the dedicated volunteers who keep the trains running, and get a behind-the-scenes look at one of Sykesville's most unique attractions!

Please note: The club will be closed during July and will not host another Open House until August 2, making this a great opportunity to stop by and visit.

We hope to see you there!
