How many states can we get to follow California?

No horse should ever have to end its life in a slaughterhouse just to become someone's meal.

California took a major step to protect horses when Governor Gavin Newsom signed a landmark law strengthening the state's protections against horses being sold for slaughter for human consumption.

The law requires animal auction yards to check and publicly post identifying information such as brands, tattoos, and microchips before horses are sold. It also requires buyers to sign a sworn statement agreeing to follow California's laws protecting horses from slaughter.

California had already taken a strong position against horse slaughter, and this law strengthened the protections already in place by making it harder for horses to disappear into the slaughter pipeline.

For the horses who have spent their lives working, racing, competing, or simply being loved as companions, the law sends a powerful message: they deserve protection, not a trip to a slaughterhouse.

A horse should be remembered for the life it lived-not for what its body could become.

With Governor Newsom's signature, California has taken another stand for horses.

Hi All,
Today I have some sad news to share.
Poor old Onyx went into system failure ( to put it simply) yesterday. Our vet throw everything he could at it.
This morning the heartwrenching decision was made by our vet that euthanasia was our only option.

He and Dottie have been together over 20 years. She also had a host of age related issues. It was the kindest thing to let them go together.

Its been rough lately with several deaths including my personal horse. Thank you all for standing by me and SHEW.
We plan to take a little time to heal and recover, then will be back at auction before the snow falls. Once the grass dies off, many poor ponies and horses get dumped. That will be our time to save a couple lives.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country — and the horses who stood beside them through history, hardship, and war. 🇺🇸🐴

From carrying soldiers into battle to serving faithfully alongside them, countless horses were lost in service as well. Their courage, loyalty, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

At Safe Haven Equine Warriors, we witness every day the incredible bond between humans and horses — a partnership built on trust, strength, and healing. This Memorial Day, we honor all who served, both human and equine, and remember the sacrifices made for the freedoms we hold dear.

May we never forget the heroes, on two legs and four. ❤️

BREAKING: Today, the US House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee advanced language that would bar the transportation of horses for slaughter for human consumption in the US and abroad.

Each year, more than 20,000 American horses are trucked to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico, where they are brutally butchered for their meat using ineffective stunning methods that can leave them conscious during dismemberment.

The bipartisan amendment to the Committee’s five-year surface transportation reauthorization bill, led by Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) and Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV), would close the legal loophole that permits this practice, achieving the same policy goal as the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act.

AWI joins the ASPCA, Return To Freedom, Wild Horse Conservation, The Wild Beauty Foundation, and advocates throughout the country in urging Congress to bring this widely supported measure across the finish line.
