St. Francis, like Christ, continuously sought to reach out to those who had lost their way and who had turned away from the faith. He did not see them as evil as much as broken and lost.

St. Anthony prayed that we see those who have lost their ways in the same way and help them with our own conversion. He said, “We ask you Lord Jesus Christ, to raise us from earthly things on the wings of virtue, and to clothe us in the whiteness of purity, whereby we may bear the burdens of our brother’s weakness and come to you who bore our burdens.

This is the year of St. Francis for this is the 800th anniversary of his death. This reflection is about St. Anthony, for on Tuesday we seek his intercession in a special way. It is intended to show how he was a true disciple of St. Francis.

If you've never been, make plans to visit the The National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton this summer! It's not far at all in Emmittsburg MD. You can learn about the life of the first American saint at the museum and grounds. While visiting you can attend Mass, Confessions and Adoration daily in the Basilica. There tours of the grounds and homes of Mother Seton. On the same trip, you can visit the beautiful National Shrine Grotto and gardens in honor of Our Lady of Lourdes just across Route 15 on the mountain of Mt. Saint Mary's.

St. Francis did not set out to change the whole world with his preaching. Rather, he committed himself to changing his own heart for he knew that the Kingdom of God could not dawn except through the conversion of people one by one. His sincere example of holiness led others to want to follow his example and to conform their lives to that of Christ as well.

We often try to figure out how we can change others to correct their ways. The most powerful way to proclaim the Gospel to them is to commit ourselves to our own conversion, which will hopefully give them an example that they will want to follow.

This year has been dedicated to the memory of St. Francis by Pope Leo because it is the 800th anniversary of his death. We will be giving a short account from his life and ministry each Sunday through this special year.
