This year the morning glories have joined my vegetable garden! I am reposting from August 2022 in remembrance of my grandmother. In the process of moving my parents to Maryland, this little blue flower reminds me that we learn so much from our families most importantly love and faith.
This flower reminds me of the blessing of so many wonderful people in my life specifically my grandmother. The September birthdays of my paternal grandmother and me are just a day apart. Apparently, I was a bit stubborn about arriving on her birthday, extending my poor mother’s labor into the next day to a full 36 hours! Still, it was something special to have our birthdays so close together. My Gramma, as I called her, went blind from a disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa but it didn’t discourage her in any way that I remember. She loved to share with us the joy in all things whether it was her faith, baking, music, or the beauty of the world. One special time I remember with her was planting our month’s flower, the Morning Glory. It was so exciting when these vines wrapped around whatever they came upon and soon each morning, lovely blue or pink flowers unfurled. While she passed away in my late teens, every time I see a Morning Glory, I still remember so many lessons she taught us about being in awe of the smallest things. I haven’t planted Morning Glories since that time with Gramma, but they have appeared EVERYWHERE I have lived. Each Summer here in Sykesville without fail, they appear around my mailbox and around my front porch! And every morning I smile, grateful for her and many others’ influence in my life. Who has God blessed you with in your life?
