Barrier-Free

Barrier-Free Barrier-Free is a community-integrated non-profit serving neurodivergent adults 18+ in Maryland.

Established in 2017, Barrier-Free serves neurodiverse individuals from Carroll, Howard, Frederick, Baltimore, and Montgomery counties via in-person and virtual programming. Barrier-Free enrolls 60+ participants across two inclusive theater companies, numerous expressive arts classes, monthly social clubs, and at the newly established Life Skills & Social Studio. Barrier-Free's inclusive theater co

mpanies follow a multi-step approach that includes establishing group dynamics, improvisational acting, script creation, and bringing a show to life on stage! Actors, staff, and mentors with varying abilities rehearse for seven months to create original one-act musicals that culminate with a final full-production performance weekend at McDaniel College's Theater. At Barrier-Free, actors are encouraged to be their most unique selves and to create, express, and achieve together!

The nonprofit world can be a roller coaster.

One day you’re told you’re asking too much. The next, you’re told you’re not doing enough. You’re expected to lower your rates, find more grants, replace paid staff with volunteers, and somehow continue providing exceptional services. Then, without warning, disability funding structures change, throwing your organization into financial uncertainty.

And through it all, you still show up every day with joy, compassion, and unwavering commitment for the people you serve.

Then someone like Dana Alonzi comes along.

With the support of the Downtown Sykesville Connection, Dana opened a beautiful pop-up shop, Un Peu Dangereux, and generously donated 100% of the proceeds for an entire month to Barrier-Free.

She also donated her time, her talent, and her heart. She worked in the shop every day, spent her days off curating beautiful pieces, styling the space, marketing the business, and pouring herself into making it a success.

When Dana learned about the financial challenges Barrier-Free was suddenly facing, she took action. She became a force for good, and the impact she has made on our organization is truly immeasurable.

“Thank you” doesn’t feel like enough.

If Dana’s generosity inspires you too, we’d love for you to help us celebrate her in the comments. 💚 Your words will remind her just how much of a difference one person can make in an entire community.

A FULL and fun Disability Pride Month it’s been! 💛

We’ve been a little quiet over here, but for good reason.

Behind the scenes, we’ve had our hands full navigating major legislative changes while planning a summer packed with friendship, community, and skill-building opportunities.

We’re excited to catch you up on everything we’ve been doing with a jam packed post!
