Preservation Sykeston

Preservation Sykeston There is a place to make donations on the website to help out.

We are a non profit organization established in 2005 to save the old school from being demolished, however, that is not our only goal, as you will see from our mission statement.

Roof is repaired. Still have to repair ceiling in the old typing room (as I remember it) and third level stairway ceiling I would like to thank Sykeston Community Club and those private donors who contributed to the first repair from last year; and welcome any other alumni, teachers, or businesses to donate to this years repair. Thank you to Central City Lumber in Carrington for donation of majority of supplies this past week. Maintenance and upkeep is spendy. No donation too big, no donation too small.

-WE STILL HAVE ABOUT 12 SHS COMPOSITE BOOKS AND 3 CAPS LEFT

We are going ahead with repair of the 1913 Sykeston School Bldg. Trying to do some fundraising for costs. I donated an extra Sykeston Bandmothers cookbook I had and a Sykeston 100th Celebration book. So first person to PM me for these, gets. Also have several SHS Composite books left that Roger Laber put together. Asking price below pictures.

Just an update on the old 1913 school building. As some of you know after a patch work fixing the roof this past spring, we had a storm go through and take part of the roof off. I guess with being the tallest building in Sykeston 85-9ph winds choose it to destroy. We had workers in there today and they were accessing damages before another repair starts. They feel that when the roof went in the June storm the side wall may have shifted also. That is a major ontaking if so. They are going to brace the room that roof was torn from, and see what the next two days bring with more severe weather coming. We waited this long for repair because our lift was not available til this Saturday. Prayers for answers and favorable weather. 😔

Happy 50th to the SHS Class of 1975!

Just an update on roof repair project. Sykeston Community Club was nice enough to donate $2000 to the repair and had 1 private donor. Still looking for more donations to fund project. Will be applying for some money from Operation Round Up and possibly another source. Been waiting for an 82’ lift to come available from United Rentals out of Bismarck. We do still have more books available that Roger Laber put together last year. They are $20 each. Picture below. Great Christmas present!
You can PM me with any questions. (This book contains pictures and names of all the graduation classes from SHS during the years 1913-2005. )

This year is our 19th year of caring for the 1913 School Building. And we have enjoyed every minute of it. Our non profit group has been getting by well with maintenance and insurance of the building but the roof of the old building is in need of repair. With the ND winds and rains, it is taking a toll. I would just like to hear the feelings of those out there on how they would like to see our group proceed. I have gotten a bid on just a repair to the areas with some galvanized tin like we have done before. That is around $4000.
-$1900 for a lift
-$1000 for materials
-$1000 for labor
Hoping to get donations from alumni and Sykeston Community Club for this.

I am thinking a complete roofing job will be well over $50,000.

Please comment below with thoughts. Someone has expressed interest in building, if we would decide to sell.

The memory tree looks beautiful and if anyone wants to send a memorial ornament, I will gladly put on the tree and send a picture. Sunday picnic in the park went great. (But I will not be taking up the catering business anytime soon) Served over 230. We were able to raise over $3200 with expenses taken out. Thank you so much to all who contributed. Here are a few pictures of Run/walk and memory tree.

Preservation Sykeston will be selling these books for $20/each over the celebration filled with the composites of each graduating class. The book was put together by Roger Laber, Class of ‘69. We are so appreciative to him for all the work he has done. We will have a table set up beside registrations on Friday night.
