William Hentschel, a member of Scouts BSA Troop 2810, chartered at Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore, has earned his Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank achievable in Scouting. He is the son of Bill and the late Candice Hentschel of Milton, Wisconsin.
Hentschel started Scouting with Pack 82 out of Hiawatha School in Kirkland in first grade, achieving all the Cub Scout ranks. In addition, he earned his Arrow of Light award. In fifth grade, he crossed over into Boy Scouts and joined Troop 2810, choosing it for its good atmosphere and sense of belonging. Even when his family moved to southern Wisconsin, he and his two younger brothers, along with their father who is Scoutmaster of the troop, continue to make the weekly trip back to Sycamore because of their strong ties to the troop.
He earned a total of 31 merit badges and two Palms, with the environmental science badge being his favorite. Hentschel held several leadership positions such as Senior Patrol Leader, Leave No Trace guide, Webmaster and Patrol Leader. He has attended six summer camps at Canyon Camp and two high adventure trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, with another trip there planned for this summer.
His Eagle project benefited the Oaken Acres Wildlife Center in Sycamore, as he built squirrel houses that would be used to rehabilitate the animals. These boxes have already been utilized by several squirrels and can be moved by staff from an enclosure to the nearby woods once they have been rehabilitated and are ready for release into the wild.
A recent graduate of Milton High School, he was part of the environmental club and Future Farmers of America where he went to State displaying dairy products. He was also on the wrestling team and was vice president of the National Honor Society. He will be attending the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point in the fall.
