Yesterday, the Miriam Home girls enjoyed a special spa day right at home! Face masks, manicures, pedicures, lotions, scrubs... you name it, they enjoyed it! There were plenty of laughs, lots of fun, and some much deserved time to simply relax and be pampered. 🧖‍♀️💅

We are so grateful to everyone who shopped from our National Relaxation Day wish list and helped make this day possible. Because of your generosity, the girls were able to enjoy an afternoon focused on fun, relaxation, and making special memories together.

Over the weekend, in honor of National Relaxation Day, we shared our wish list for a special at home Spa Day for the girls at the Miriam Home, and you all have already started showing up!

Packages are arriving, and we are so grateful to everyone who have purchased an item, shared our post, or helped spread the word. ❤️

We’re using it as the perfect excuse to start planning a little Spa Day for our Miriam Home girls! 🧖‍♀️💅

We want to create a fun afternoon where the girls can relax, laugh together, and enjoy being pampered a little. We’re planning things like:

🥒 Cucumber eye patches & face masks
💦 Facial mists & moisturizing
🧊 Cool washcloth facials
💅 Nail polish & nail stickers
🫧 Warm hand soaks
✨ DIY sugar hand scrubs
🧴 Hand lotion & more!

🌻 Look what our Miriam Home girls grew! 🍅🥒🫑

The girls have worked hard in the garden this summer, and now they’re getting to enjoy the fruits (and veggies 😉) of their labor!

At the Miriam Home, we love finding opportunities to teach the girls practical life skills they can carry with them into the future. Learning how to plant, tend a garden, and grow their own food teaches responsibility, patience, hard work, and the satisfaction of seeing something you cared for grow. 🌱

We’re also incredibly grateful for the volunteers who have given their time this summer to help plant and tend the garden alongside our girls. Even more importantly, they’ve taken the time to teach them about gardening and share their knowledge along the way. ❤️

It’s about so much more than growing vegetables. It’s learning new skills, building relationships, and seeing the results of a summer of hard work.

Truth About Trauma: “They’re just seeking attention.”
Sometimes… they are.
But what if instead of stopping there, we asked why they need our attention?

For a child who has experienced abuse, trauma, or neglect, seeking attention may be their way of looking for connection, reassurance, safety, or help. They may not know how to say, “I’m struggling,” “I need you,” or “I don’t know what to do with what I’m feeling.”

So sometimes, it comes out through their behavior.
As we wrap up our Truth About Trauma series, we hope you’ve learned a little more about how trauma can affect a child’s behavior and why understanding where that behavior is coming from matters.

That doesn’t mean ignoring inappropriate behavior or removing boundaries. Kids still need expectations, structure, and accountability. But they also need adults who are willing to look beyond the behavior and help them work through what’s behind it.

Healing takes time. It takes patience. And perhaps most importantly, it takes consistency.

At Open Arms, we have the privilege of walking alongside kids as they learn that the adults in their lives can be safe, dependable, and there for them day after day. 💜

Have you ever tried to do something fun with your kids and it turned into an epic fail? 😂

Well… that was us last week at the Miriam Home!

After receiving a generous donation of watermelons, we decided to try the viral watermelon rubber band experiment. You know the one where you keep adding rubber bands until the watermelon finally explodes.

Sounds fun, right? In theory. 🤣

After about 30 rubber bands, several painful snapbacks on the fingers and hands of our staff, and a watermelon that was showing absolutely NO signs of giving up, we admitted defeat. Maybe our rubber bands were too small. Maybe our watermelon was just too big. Either way, Plan A was officially over.

So naturally, we moved on to Plan B: drop the watermelon from the back of a truck bed. 🍉💥

Was it the experiment we planned? Nope.

Did we still have a lot of fun? Absolutely!

Sometimes the best memories aren't made when everything goes according to plan. They're made when you laugh, improvise, and enjoy being together.

And that's exactly what happened with our Miriam Home girls. ❤️

We are currently hiring full-time and part-time Residential Behavioral Specialists (RBS) for the Miriam Home. We're looking for compassionate, ministry-minded individuals who are called to walk alongside these young women, offering encouragement, support, stability, and hope as they heal.
