in 1759, George Washington wed a young widow Martha Dandridge Custis. 🔔

Martha was charming, accomplished, and wealthy. George had his own appeal. Over six foot two inches tall (compared with Martha, who was only five feet tall), George was an imposing figure whose reputation as a military leader preceded him.

After their marriage, Washington would become the legal guardian of Martha’s children, responsible for managing and protecting their financial affairs.

Betty Washington Lewis was more than just the only sister of George Washington to survive to adulthood; she was also a patriot. Lewis and her husband, Fielding, contributed a considerable amount of their personal wealth and time toward the American Revolution.

Fielding and Betty supplied salt, flour, bacon, and clothing to patriot forces during the war. Herbs and other produce from Betty's gardens became teas and ointments given to help the army.
