It's National Nursing Assistants Day, and we want to say it plainly: thank you.

Not a generic thank you. We know what the job really is. You get up early before everyone else has breakfast. You feel the losses of the hard goodbyes. You do the up close tasks no one else wants. And you show up every day anyway because somebody's mom is counting on you.

CNAs, the older adults of southwestern Illinois are better cared for because of you. This day is yours.

What could older adults across the US do with an extra $28.3 billion?

That's how much is stolen annually from adults over 60, with nearly 75% is taken by people they know and trust.

It's up to other people they love and trust to report it and help get justice.

Financial exploitation is a serious issue affecting many older adults. If you suspect abuse or neglect, call 1-866-800-1409 to report it confidentially.

We showed up. Now show us your purple!

The AgeSmart team wore purple today for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in every shade and style, for every reason that matters to us personally.

This morning, our CEO took the message to KMOX News Total Information AM with Megan Lynch, sharing how we can all be on the look out AND how to help. (And yes, that's an owl necklace. Higgins couldn't resist.)

Out in the community, we connected with our friends from the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois, also in purple, also showing up... because domestic violence happens to elders too.

This is what one day of awareness looks like. Imagine what we can do the other 364.

Now it's your turn. Drop a photo in the comments — purple outfit, purple ribbon, purple anything. We want to see who else showed up today.

Did you know that 1 in 4 vulnerable adults in Illinois experience financial exploitation?

Sadly, many abusers are close relatives, including adult children and caregivers.

If you suspect abuse or neglect of an older adult or person with disabilities, call the Department on Aging’s 24-hour Adult Protective Services Hotline at 1-866-800-1409.

It's up to all of us. Protecting our seniors starts with awareness and action.

Monday, June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. We need you to wear purple to help raise awareness.

Elder abuse isn't a headline from another state. It's happening right here, right under our noses.

It's helping an older adult with their finances, only to help themselves to their money.

It's the new "friend" who stops by a few hours a week, then a few hours a day, then moves in. And every other relationship suddenly sours.

It's the credit cards they never knew were opened , and are now responsible for.

Before COVID, an estimated 1 in 10 older adults experienced abuse. During COVID, it spiked to 1 in 5. And 75% of the time, the person responsible is a trusted family member or caregiver. That's why so much of it goes unreported.

Here's the good news: the single best defense against elder abuse is social connection. Every meal delivered, every ride, every class, every ombudsman visit, every game of dominoes at the senior center, these moments keep older adults visible, connected, and protected. That's the work AgeSmart and our partners do across all seven of our counties, every single day.

If you're worried about an older adult, you don't have to be sure. You just have to be concerned. One call to Adult Protective Services can change everything: 1-866-800-1409 (run locally by our friends at SIVNA) or visit ilaging.illinois.gov.

And tomorrow (Monday) — wear purple.

You don't need a fancy ballgown. A shirt, a ribbon, socks, whatever you've got. Then tell one person why you're wearing it. Awareness is how we create change together.

Higgins got dressed for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day early. (He's been wearing the scarf since Friday. We didn't have the heart to tell him it's not Monday yet!)

Monday is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Since he's a wise owl, he knows as many as 1 in 5 older adults experience abuse, usually at the hands of someone they trust. He's also learned the best defense is staying connected. That's the work we get to do every day.

Worried about an older adult? You don't have to be sure, just concerned: Adult Protective Services, 1-866-800-1409.

Wear purple Monday. Higgins went with the biggest scarf he could find. Anything counts.
