Valor team member Josh recovered this King Georg III half penny.

King George III half pennys were minted from 1770-1807 with various designs and specifications throughout the period.

For being in the ground for roughly 230 years, these coins usually dont come out with any "meat" on them. Luckily this one still had plenty of identifiable markings to get a clear ID.

Active duty Marine and VALOR team member Josh has found an amazing set of Marine Corps history relics - all three variants of World War II enlisted Marine uniform buttons! Although it’s taken quite a lot of digging to finally complete the set, it’s a collection anyone would be extremely proud to display. Congratulations and Semper Fi, Josh!

This is that time of the year where there's a big shift in available locations to find history beneath our feet. This is due to farm fields being planted for the yearly crop season.

Luckily, not all is lost. Beach metal detecting still offers its fair share of history to include modern jewelry.

If you notice the black tarnish on those 4 (1949-D quarter, 1934 mercury dime, and 1954 1951 silver Roosevelt dimes)silver coins. Thats a result of them being in salt water for decades.

If you ever want to remove that black tarnish, simply put the coins in boiling water with tinfoil and baking soda and let them sit for a few minutes. Afterwards, another trick is to take a pink eraser and rub the coins. You'll be amazed. Also attached are some before and after photos of what that looks like.

While out detecting with Vice President John Urbon (Kaz) and Historical Research Officer Chad Bilzing, Valor President Alexander Logan recovered an 1855 Seated Liberty Half Dime—just days before the plows would’ve buried it for good.

The team was doing what we do best: chasing history, cracking jokes, and enjoying the peace only the field can offer. For us as veterans and active duty, metal detecting is more than a hobby—it’s therapeutic. It clears the mind, builds camaraderie, and reconnects us with purpose.

Fun Fact: In 1855, America was charging into a new era—stagecoaches ruled the overland routes, steamboats dominated the rivers, and in true frontier fashion, the U.S. Army launched the Camel Corps, importing camels to carry supplies across the Southwest deserts. That same year, someone dropped this coin—and now it’s been rescued from history’s rearview mirror.

History saved. Laughs shared. Mission accomplished.

Mystery in the Field: John Urbon Unusual Seated Dime Discovery

Valor Vice President (Kaz) recently unearthed a peculiar piece: a Seated Liberty dime with its entire outer rim meticulously removed. Only faint details of Lady Liberty and the “ONE DIME” inscription remain.

This alteration raises intriguing questions. Was this coin repurposed as a trade token during a time when small denominations were scarce? Or perhaps it served as a love token, a common 19th-century practice where coins were modified into keepsakes or jewelry. The precise removal of the rim suggests intentional modification rather than damage.

Such finds offer a tangible connection to the past, hinting at the everyday lives and practices of those who came before us. Kaz’s discovery is a testament to the stories waiting to be uncovered beneath our feet.

Throwback Find – Just in Time!
Right before the plows hit the field, Valor member Ed Walsh pulled a silver surprise from the dirt—an 1840 “No Drapery” Seated Liberty Half Dime in remarkably good shape for its age!

The “No Drapery” variety lacks the extra fold in Liberty’s elbow—an early design tweak corrected later that year. While not ultra rare, it’s a cool and collectible piece, and finding one in the wild, especially this clean, is a win in any detectorist’s book.

This coin was inches away from being lost to the plow. Right place, right time.
