HISTORICAL HYDE COUNTY COURTHOUSE TIDBITS: Part 1: In 1696, the area we now know as Hyde County was part of Bath County which, in 1705, was divided into three precincts. Wickham Precinct was where the present Hyde County was located. Around 1712 those three precincts were renamed again, and we became Hyde Precinct and our territory included land which lay in Beaufort County. An act separating Beaufort and Hyde Counties in 1729 also authorized a courthouse to be build on the west side of the Pungo River in Woodstock, which became our first county seat. It is thought that around 1790 the county seat was moved from Woodstock to Bell’s Bay (or Jasper’s Creek). A 1791 law was passed which was to establish a town - supposedly where the courthouse was already built. The town was named Germantown. (Photo credit: HYDEGENWEB) To be continued…
