With the Spring season approaching, now is the time to assess your child's equipment. Below is information regarding the best sizing for your child:
Gloves
Hand size is certainly a factor in selecting a new glove but fit and pocket are also considerations when making your purchase. It is something that is best to try on in store vs. blindly ordering on the internet, especially if it's the first time you're moving up a glove from tee ball. You can also get the glove steamed and broken in with an in-store purchase, which will help greatly. For kids playing in farm and higher divisions, it's especially important that your player is equipped with the right size glove. 10.5-12.25" is the appropriate size range for that age group (note that 10.5 tee ball glove is not the same as 10.5 regular youth glove); below are recommendations by age ranges:
Under 7 9-10.5"
7-9 10.75-11.5"
10-12 11.25-12.25"
Bats
There are three things to consider when choosing a bat: Length, Weight, and Certification
Length: suggested minimum size based on age:
7-8 years old: No smaller than a 27-inch bat
9-10 years old: No smaller than a 28-inch bat
11-12 years old: No smaller than a 30-inch bat
Since bats can be expensive, consider the next size up if the player is at the top of their age range so it can last them longer.
Weight: You’ll often hear the term “drop” followed by a number (e.g., Drop 10). This refers to how many ounces are reduced from the length. For example, a 30-inch Drop 10 bat will weigh 20 ounces.
Certification: All bats MUST be USA-certified to be used in Little League. USSSA and BBCOR bats are NOT allowed for games, so be sure to check the label before purchasing. (Note: BBCOR is allowed for 50/70, Juniors and Seniors)
Catchers Gear
While SLL provides each team with a set of gear for the season, kids who catch frequently sometimes prefer to have their own equipment. In the event your child does have an interest in their own - and you have a desire to purchase it - we recommend this set (particularly for the 7-10 crowd) based on quality, price and the ease of getting on and off independently.
