The Juneteenth season is upon us! We are proud that the North Shore Juneteenth Association is collaborating with multiple communities to host Juneteenth flag-raising ceremonies and events throughout the region.

These gatherings are moments of reflection, education, unity, and celebration of freedom, resilience, and Black history.

Revere, Lynn, Marblehead, Swampscott, Danvers, Salem, and many more communities are coming together to honor the significance of Juneteenth and the continued journey toward equity and justice.

The Juneteenth flag itself symbolizes freedom expanding across the nation and the enduring fight for liberation.

We invite residents, families, organizations, and allies to join us at one or more of these meaningful events as we raise the flag, uplift Black voices, and celebrate culture and community together.

On this day in 1942, the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was signed into law—opening the door for women to serve in new and vital ways. Until May 14, 1942, women were only allowed to enlist for noncombat duties in the military. Following the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Congress created the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, allowing women to take on a greater role in the military. The WAAC was established “For the purpose of making available to the national defense the knowledge, skill and special training of women of the nation.”

Their legacy continues through the generations of women veterans who serve today. At DAV, we’re proud to support women veterans with the benefits, resources and recognition they deserve.
