The Swampscott Police Department stands with heavy hearts in solidarity with the Uxbridge Police Department as they mourn the tragic line-of-duty death of Officer Laporta, who was killed while assisting a motorist.

Even though this tragedy occurred outside our community, its impact is felt throughout the law enforcement profession. Officer Laporta’s actions exemplified the commitment and selflessness that define public service and the very best of policing.

We extend our deepest condolences to Officer Laporta’s family, friends, and fellow officers at the Uxbridge Police Department

Please know that you are not alone our department stands with you during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest in peace, Officer Laporta.

May 1963

By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation:
Whereas, from the beginning of this Nation, law enforcement officers have played an important role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms which are guaranteed by the Constitution and in protecting the lives and property of our citizens; and
Whereas, through constant application of new procedures and techniques, such officers are becoming more efficient in their enforcement of our laws; and
Whereas it is important that our people know and understand the problems, duties, and responsibilities of their police departments and the necessity for cooperating with them in maintaining law and order; and
Whereas it is fitting and proper that we express our gratitude for the dedicated service and courageous deeds of law enforcement officers and for the contributions they have made to the security and well-being of all our people; and
Whereas, by a joint resolution approved October 1, 1962 (76 Stat. 676), the Congress has requested the President to designate May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week during which such May 15 occurs as Police Week:
Now, Therefore, I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate May 15, 1963, and May 15 of each succeeding year, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of those peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, have lost their lives or have become disabled in the performance of duty.
I also designate the week of May 12 through May 18, 1963, and the calendar week during which May 15 occurs of each succeeding year, as Police Week, in recognition of the service given by the men and women who, night and day, protect us through enforcement of our laws.
I invite State and local governments, patriotic, civic, and educational organizations, and the people of the United States generally, to observe Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week in this year and each succeeding year with appropriate ceremonies in which all our people may join in commemorating law enforcement officers, past and present, who by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities have rendered a dedicated service to their communities, and, in so doing, have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.
DONE at the City of Washington this fourth day of May in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and eighty-seventh.

Today, we remember the lives lost and the heroes that emerged from the tragic events of 09/11. 23 years later we still remember the impact of that day and the lives that were lost. We honor the bravery of first responders, the resilience of survivors, and the strength of a nation that came together in the face of adversity.

Memorial Police Week, this is a good read...

Chief’s Babble….On Police Memorial Week.

This week is Police Memorial Week. It seems odd…I guess…that there is a profession in our great country with a week set aside to honor Americans killed while working. We aren’t talking about military deployment in some overseas hotbed of turmoil. We are talking about police officers… Americans… killed on the streets of our cities, towns and states. I have mentioned it here before and will continue to drive it home….Police Officers go to work everyday wearing bullet-resistant vests to protect themselves from fellow citizens. It is unconscionable.

Police work, in my ever-humble-internet-sensation opinion, is the best profession in the world. I know some of you have met officers you didn’t care for very much. I get that. I have met police officers, teachers, factory workers, lawyers and doctors I have not liked interacting with. Every profession has grumpy people. I choose to not judge an entire profession by one interaction. I hope you will do the same.

To all police officers out there….and a bunch of you read our page….thank-you for everything. Thanks for walking into that dark building at night, answering a burglar alarm with an open door…and the hair on the back of your neck is standing on end. Thank-you for answering the call for the domestic dispute and the abuser who wants to assault you, too. Thanks for getting punched in the face while at work. Thanks for knowing you must have the exact proper back-drop before returning fire…while the criminal who is shooting at you can fire indiscriminately without a care in the world. Thanks for understanding you have less than one second to make a decision…and attorneys will have three years to scrutinize you.

Thanks for hugging that child…the one who just watched a loved one die in a car crash. Thanks for taking time to speak with that other child….the one who has no positive role model to be found. Thanks for NOT kicking the life out of the pe*****le. We must rise above the roadside justice…

Thanks for answering the call for “cows in the road”. Yes, we are wranglers, too. Thanks for completing your mountains of paperwork on time. We know the drunk driver is snug in his bed before your paperwork is done. Thanks for working all night and then making three court appearances…at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1:00 in the afternoon. Thanks for watching our houses while we sleep. Thanks for working for the supervisor who probably should have retired 10 years ago. Thanks for working for those who do not support you, including elected people who sometimes use you as pawns.

And to all who have died on this job….thank-you for your sacrifice to the greatest profession on earth. We honor and love all of you…we will guard your kids and we will continue the watch…..Chief Oliver
