"Veterans Feed Library Kids"

"The Veterans at the Library grilled hot dogs for the Kick Off Party for the Summer Reading Program at the Franklin Memorial Library Thursday morning, May 28, 2026, at 11:00. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding we had over 100 in attendance. The Library thanked the Veterans for their kindness and willingness to invest in the children and families of our community that really makes a difference. They also said that because of sponsors like the veterans, they are able to provide exciting programs, activities and opportunities that encourage a love for reading, learning and imagination throughout the summer months. Also they said that our support helps create lasting memories and meaningful experiences for the children who walk through their doors."

"Mosley speaks to the Veterans"

"The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Library, Monday morning, June 8, 2026, at 9:00. With Veteran Scotty Nasworthy presiding, we had 30 in attendance. Shari Watt and Joyce Fennell furnished us with Breakfast casserole, grits, cut up fruit and honey bun cake. Also, Shari provided the orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice and coffee. Veteran Scotty then introduced LaPortia Mosley who is the Community Engagement Officer for the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah, GA. LaPortia talked to us about what the GHS does and how important it is for us to preserve our photos and historical information about our families for future generations. LaPortia is a ECI graduate of the Class of 2004. LaPortia has been attending our "Veterans at the Library" meetings for several months, gathering information from our different veterans about their service. Veteran Scotty then talked to us and updated us about the December 19, 2027 Wreaths Across America project."

"Tapley Speaks to Veterans at the Library"

"The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday morning, June 1, 2026, at 9:00. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding we had 34 in attendance. Shari Watt provided the breakfast for us this morning consisting of pancakes, sausage, syrup, jelly, fruit and all the teaming's. Shari also provided the orange juice, grape juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, and coffee. The food was outstanding and we want to thank her for doing this for the Veterans. Our speaker this morning was our chair Johnny Tapley. Johnny talked to us about our successful "3rd Veterans Cup Golf Tournament" and the outstanding Memorial Day service we had last Monday at the Veterans and 1st Responders Memorial Park. The park looks great and the City of Swainsboro has done a fantastic job in cleaning it up. They said that since the park is up to standard that it only needs to be maintained every two weeks so the citizens of Emanuel County and visitors will enjoy using it. Chair Johnny also talked about the very successful event that the Library held this past Thursday to start their Summer reading program. The Veterans furnished and grilled the hotdogs for over 100 children and parents for the occasion. Chair Johnny also mentioned about the planned "gun drawing" that is in the works. The Veterans plan on having a ticket sale and then drawing each day for 30 days for a gun. Be sure and purchase at least 10 tickets for this outstanding "gun drawing". The Veterans discussed the possibility of purchasing an ice machine for the library and this will be discussed with Director Windy Ward about the possibility and where it would be located in the library, maybe the kitchen.

"Memorial Day Service held at the Veterans & 1st Responders Memorial Park"

"The 5th Annual Memorial Day Service was held at 11:00, Monday, May 25, 2026, at the Veterans & 1st Responders Memorial Park. Before the service a breakfast, sponsored by the Emanuel Medical Center, was held at the hospital cafeteria at 8:00. Over 40 veterans and Brier Creek Artillery members attended this annual breakfast. The Memorial Day, A Day of Remembrance, event started off with a welcome from Chair Johnny Tapley, then the invocation by Veteran Malachi Lockett. The Pledge to the Flag of the United States was led by Veteran Robert Ladocsky. Historian Steve Burke then made comments of what our county looked like 250 years ago during the American Revolution. Veteran Dess Smith III then talked about what happened to this county after the Revolutionary War and then he dedicated the new Revolutionary War Monument by reading the names of the 31 Revolutionary War Patriots that are buried in Emanuel County. After each name was read, Veteran Jim McCurdy tolled the bell twice. Veteran Scotty Nasworthy then mentioned each Monument; War Between the States, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Global War on Terror (Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa). After each monument was read, Veteran Jim McCurdy tolled the bell twice. Veteran Wayne Cannady and Adiela Serralde then read out each of the names of the 40 service men and women that we fly the U.S. Flag on the fence. After each name was read, Veteran Jim McCurdy tolled the bell twice. Al Lawson, Jr. then read out the names of each of the Emanuel County's Firemen & Law Enforcement officers that are listed on the Monument. After each name was read, Veteran Jim McCurdy tolled the bell twice. Then Joyce Fennell talked about and dedicated the new Rosie the Riveter Monument. Then the Brier Creek Artillery (Wiregrass, Brier Creek, Little River Chapters) fired a 3-round volley salute (12 rounds) with their 4 cannons (four 6-pounders). After the 3-round volley salute, Veteran Scotty Nasworthy played taps on his bugle. The Memorial service was ended with Closing remarks from Chair Johnny Tapley and the Benediction by Veteran Malachi Lockett. The attendance was approximately 100. The event was sponsored by the Veterans at the Library, Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and The American Legion. Both monuments were funded by grants from the Mill Creek Foundation. We have to give our appreciation to Brandon Chapman of the Southeast Monument Company located in Swainsboro on Hiway 80 East. He worked hard in getting the perfect monuments, engraving them and installing them in the Park for the Memorial Service. A special thanks to Jane Durden, Shari Watt, Emanuel Medical Center, Damiun Scott, the Brier Creek Artillery, the City of Swainsboro and the Swainsboro Fire Department (trucks)."

"3rd Annual Veterans Cup Golf Tournament held"

"The Veterans at the Library held their 3rd Annual Veterans Cup Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The event was outstanding, thanks to the veterans, local businesses, team participants, Swainsboro Country Club, the Franklin Memorial Library, DAR, SAR, and many others. Each team was given a bag of items such as event t-shirts and golf ball towels and for lunch, they enjoyed grilled chicken, beans and cold drinks prepared by Veteran Albert Hall and William Riner using Albert's secret recipe's. When Commander Steve Burke ordered Compatriot Dess Smith III to fire the 6-pounder Field Gun cannon to start the Veterans Cup Golf Tournament at 8:00, the clouds did not part again this year, and the rain held off for a beautiful day of golf. The 1st Place men's Champion's were: Charlie Chappell, Mark Jordan, and Chris Seabolt, They won the $630.00 for first place. The 2nd place men's team were: Terry Webb, Lanyton Webb, and Derrick Webb. They won $420.00. The 3rd place men's team were: Jerry Bedingfield, Josh Bedingfield, and Drew Cooper. They won $300.00. The 1st Place women's Champion were: Marsha Riner, Lindsey Radford and Sandra Bailes. They won $200.00. The 2nd Place women's team were: Joan Nasworthy, Rhonda Wiggins and Cathy McDaniel.
