Our Story
Lambert High School's Blessings in a Backpack is a student-run club. We are responsible for raising all of the money for purchasing the food; $80 feeds one child in the program for an entire 38-week school year. We work with social workers and guidance counselors to identify the children that will receive the backpacks.
Each Friday morning, from 7:30 to 8:15 AM, Lambert High club members arrive to pack the backpacks. Once filled, parent volunteers deliver the backpacks to the designated schools throughout the county. The backpacks are distributed to the children for the weekend. This process is repeated each week for the entire school year.
When our program started in early 2013, we provided food to 50 students in seven elementary schools across the county. Each year, we saw tremendous growth in the organization, in terms of our volunteer-base and in the number of children we provided for. As of now, we sponsor 275 students in 15 Forsyth County middle & elementary schools. Ultimately, our goal is to provide a backpack to every child in the county that needs one.
