Soldier Saturday
Patriot William Candler was born about 1738 in Belfast Ireland. He came to America with his parents and lived in Virginia. He wed Elizabeth Anthony in 1761 and within a year was living in Georgia. By 1771, he was a “Deputy Surveyor”. As the War of Independence kicked off, William Candler found himself in the field under the notable Patriot Elijah Clarke, with whom he fought at Augusta. By late summer of 1780, he was a Major and commanded a small group of Georgians in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Among other Georgia militia nominally under his control was the notorious Captain Patrick Carr, well known for his barbarous treatment of loyalists & tories alike. The attached map is taken from Lyman Draper’s 1881 monumental work “Kings Mountain and its Heroes” and shows the approximate location of Patriot forces early on. Some have written that Major Candler’s force was attached to that of Colonel James Williams, and others have mapped Candler’s location to be between Williams and Shelby, so his spot on the map is your call. William Candler rose to the rank of Colonel and in the post-war era became a member of the Georgia Legislature and a Judge.
