On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress made it official: thirteen stars and thirteen stripes would represent our new nation.

Nearly 250 years later, the Stars and Stripes still fly as one of the most recognized symbols of freedom in the world. For DAR, the flag is more than a symbol. It is a living connection to the patriots who fought for the ideals it represents and a reminder of the values we carry forward every day.

Through flag ceremonies, educational programs, and community events, DAR chapters nationwide work to ensure that the history and meaning behind our flag is never forgotten. On Flag Day and every day, we are proud to honor it.

Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸
On June 14, we celebrate the Stars and Stripes and the resolution adopted by the Second Continental Congress in 1777 that established our nation's flag.
For 135 years, the DAR has carried the torch of patriotism. The DAR continues to encourage respect for the American flag through education, proper etiquette, and patriotism. On Flag Day, we honor the values our flag represents—freedom, resilience, and patriotism.

Ring your bells and celebrate America 250 in Lawrenceville on Sat August 1st! Our Suwanee Creek Chapter DAR will have a Genealogy table in the Historic Gwinnett Courthouse - come visit us!

đź”” America 250: Celebrating Our Journeyđź””

The sound of a bell has always carried deep meaning—calling communities together, marking moments of celebration, and reminding us of our shared history.

As we prepare to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we need your help.

The City of Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, and other partners are planning a special community-wide event on Saturday, August 1, 2026, to honor our nation’s independence. (This date reflects history—most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, including Georgia’s three, didn’t sign until August 2, 1776.) The Gwinnett Historical Society is proud to partner in this celebration.

🎉 A variety of family-friendly activities are being planned for the day—one of the highlights will be a county-wide community bell ringing.

🔔 Here’s the moment:
At exactly 2:50 PM, bells across Gwinnett will ring in unison for 2 minutes and 50 seconds.

In that shared moment, we will pause—not only to remember where we’ve been, but to reflect on who we are and who we aspire to become.

đź’ˇ How you can help:
We’re inviting churches and places of worship, schools, and community organizations with working bells to join us in this county-wide ringing.

👉 Do you know of a bell in your community?
👉 Does your church or organization want to participate?

Let us know!
Drop a comment below or reach out at [email protected] so we can connect and include them in this historic event.

(Bells are already confirmed in Lawrenceville and Grayson—let’s keep it growing!)

Let’s make history together.

Huzzah!

👔 “Suitable: The Sartorial Revolution and the Fashioning of Modern Men” with Chloe Chapin

The American Revolution didn’t just happen through documents and declarations — it also evolved on the backs of men. Before 1776, elite colonists dressed to emulate European aristocracy: colorful silks, gold lace, jeweled buckles. As revolutionary fervor grew, men like Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin deliberately traded opulence for plain, dark wool. Chapin traces how this shift from “peacocks to penguins” was a deeply political act — and how the modern suit was born out of rebellion as a material translation of the Declaration of Independence.

🎓 Chloe Chapin is a historian and costume designer with a Ph.D. in American Studies from Harvard. A former Broadway costumer and Fulbright Scholar, she has held research fellowships at the Smithsonian, Mount Vernon, Monticello, and the American Antiquarian Society.
