200 Years ago, a rural farming community became part of the Industrial Revolution Story. Cotton was king! Farmlands transformed into rough ashlar granite mill sites, streams became ponds, open space became company housing, and a self-contained Village grew housing a French-Canadian, Catholic workforce. The 1920s - 1930s saw cotton manufacturing moving to the Southern states while fire, flood, and bankruptcy transformed the bustling village into a smaller community with the residents seeking work in neighboring communities or moving during the 1920s-1940s.
The Historical Society is hosting a memory sharing event in recognition of 200 years with a focus on capturing the memories of those who lived, worked, or visited this special Village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, from the 1940s to current day. We are also interested in any and all photos from the earlier years.
What stories, memories, or influential residents should be preserved to tell Manchaug's story 100 years from today? What makes Manchaug special and unique? Help your history keepers gather and document this information for future generations. A Society genealogist will also be available to assist with questions or family research. Let's keep Manchaug's story going!!!
Bring your special photos of buildings, community events, scenery, etc. and any physical mementos to share.
Light snacks will be provided.
