A PERFECT DAY FOR A PARADE!!
Join the Sutton Historical Society as they celebrate America250 with The Sutton Fourth for a day of festivities in Sutton. Roads close at 9:30. Parking on Putnam Hill Road behind high school, St. Mark's Church, and the Congregational Church. Elementary lot parking will open once parade clears out.
As you set up for the parade, look for the six Witness Houses along Boston Road. These were homes standing during the Revolution and witnessed the birth of our nation. Did you know John Hancock owned a home in Sutton?
The homes are adorned with bunting and period decorations with a banner on property with a QR code for visitors to learn more about the home. From 9 am - 10 am, costumed interpreters will be at the locations to share the History. visit https://www.suttonhistoricalsocietyinc.org/self-guided-historical-site-information.html for the details of each home. A big shoutout to Society Assistant Curator Charlie Wilson for being the lead on this project.
At 9:30 am, join Senator Fattman and Representative McKenna on the corner of Uxbridge Road and Boston Road in the Parade MC tent as they present a copy of the 1776 printing of the Declaration of Independence to Sutton Select Board Chair Jonathan Anderson.
The Declaration of Independence will be read in its entirety beginning at 9:45 am by Glenn Coulter, portraying Reverend David Hall, who would have read it to the Sutton Congregation in 1776.
Parade kicks off at 10 am SHARP. The Society has a not-to-miss float thanks to President Brian Stevenson, and the Cannon Crew will be towing Sutton's own Civil War Cannon. Keep an eye out for the Manchaug History Float as well. Rumor is you may see the Mayflower and George Washington could be crossing the Delaware, plus more!!!
This year's theme was a LIVING TIMELINE, and the parade committee has outdone itself. Thanks to April Eaton Brown and the talented, dedicated crew of volunteers who stepped up for the 2-year planning. Thanks to all the sponsors who make this event happen. Thanks to ALL the groups who stepped up to participate. Community spirit lives in Sutton.
At noon, make sure to be at the Main Stage for an amazing historical interpretation of Deborah Sampson, Revolutionary War Patriot, brought to you by History At Play through a grant from the Sutton Cultural Council, a local agency, funded by the Mass Cultural Council a state agency to the Sutton Historical Society.
Music, games, crafts, food trucks, will be ongoing from noon to 6 pm at the High School Grounds. Stop by the Sutton Historical Society Booth, to get a glimpse of the circa 1781 Naval Flag!! This is a gem for not only the Society, but the Town and State as well.
That's not all......FIREWORKS!!!! 9:15 pm, be in the Center or any viewing spot in Sutton. Prior to the kickoff, grab a bite from the Congregational Church crew which will be serving up burgers and dogs.
