Scholarship opportunity for students pursuing LVN licensure.

The Lassen College Foundation is honored to announce the Jonni’s Legacy Scholarship, made possible through the generous support of the Vogt-Morentz Charitable Fund.

Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to Lassen College students pursuing their LVN education.

Jonni was a very special woman who brought joy to her family and friends. She loved painting, and her beautiful artwork was even featured on an award-winning olive oil from Winterhall Farms.

Her legacy also reminds us of something incredibly important: the need for well-trained healthcare professionals—especially LVNs—in our skilled nursing and long-term care facilities. As our communities age, having caring, qualified professionals available to care for our loved ones close to home becomes more important than ever.

We are grateful to the Vogt-Morentz Charitable Fund for helping carry Jonni’s legacy forward by investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals serving our community.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Susanville Indian Rancheria (SIR) is soliciting proposals from qualified contractors for juniper removal, brush management, and woody residue/slash treatment on approximately 143 acres of SIR trust lands in Lassen County, California. The project will improve sagebrush-steppe habitat, forest/rangeland resiliency, and wildlife habitat.

KEY PROJECT INFORMATION
• Project Area: Approximately 143 acres
• Location: SIR trust lands north of Susanville, CA
• Maximum Budget: $170,000
• Contract Completion: December 31, 2026
• Procurement: Competitive sealed bidding
• Prevailing Wage: Davis-Bacon requirements apply
• Indian Preference: Applies to contracting, subcontracting, employment, and training opportunities

SCOPE OF WORK
Contractor shall provide all labor, equipment, materials, supervision, and services necessary to:
• Remove designated live and dead western juniper and manage encroaching brush.
• Protect designated old-growth juniper, cavity-nesting habitat, leave trees, hardwoods, conifers, fences, monuments, and other identified features.
• Cut juniper to a maximum 6-inch stump height.
• Buck larger woody material into firewood-size pieces.
• Treat slash through approved lop-and-scatter and/or piling methods.
• Perform work in accordance with applicable NRCS Conservation Practice Standards, project specifications, Best Management Practices, and applicable Tribal, federal, state, and local requirements.

Lassen Fire Safe Council to Resume Hazardous Fuels Reduction Work Near Paiute Lane and Upper Susanville Ranch Park
Susanville, California – Lassen Fire Safe Council, Inc. (LFSC) is resuming hazardous fuels reduction work in the Paiute Lane area within and adjacent to the upper Susanville Ranch Park. Work will consist of hand thinning brush and small trees with chainsaws and processing with a track-mounted chipper.

This effort is part of the larger North Susanville WUI Fuels Treatment Project, funded through a CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant. The project aims to reduce hazardous wildfire fuels throughout the landscape north of Susanville, establish and maintain strategic fuel breaks, and remove dead and dying hazard trees adjacent to public and private infrastructure.

The North Susanville WUI Fuels Treatment Project extends from Eagle Lake Road (County Road A-1) to upper Susanville Ranch Park near Paiute Lane. To date, approximately 2,290 acres have been treated to reduce hazardous wildfire fuels.

Work within the Susanville Ranch Park is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to last up to two weeks. Park visitors and trail users are advised to use caution while crews are operating in the area. Operations will occur Monday through Friday, from early morning through mid-afternoon. LFSC is making every effort to minimize impacts on park users while completing this critical wildfire risk reduction work.

Lassen Fire Safe Council holds monthly public meetings at 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the Susan River Fire Protection District, 705-145 US Highway 395, Susanville, California.

Funding for this project is provided by CAL FIRE’s CCI Wildfire Prevention Grants Program. California Climate Investments puts billions of dollars of Cap-and-Trade auction proceeds to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, improving public health and the environment, and providing meaningful benefits to the most disadvantaged communities and low-income communities and households.

Update- Unfortunately, Dan Weaver has had an emergency and will not be able to attend. He will be attending the September 16th meeting instead.

Lassen Fire Safe Council is excited to announce that Lassen Community College's Director of Fire Technology, Dan Weaver, will be our guest speaker at the August 19, 2026 General Meeting, held at the Susan River Fire Hall, 705-145 Highway 395, Johnstonville at 5:30 pm. We will have light refreshment for attendees.

Come learn about this exciting opportunities to enter the fire technology/firefighting fields at our own Lassen Community College.

LFSC has supported this program and the Forestry program through Lassen College Foundation & Alumni Association scholarships as a part of our efforts to grow our own region's workforce to better protect our communities.

This should help secure funding for the County Coordinator throughout our state.

Senate Bill 973 has officially passed out of the California State Senate, marking an important step forward for wildfire resilience efforts across California. 🌲🔥

The bill now moves to the California State Assembly, where it has been referred to the Assembly Natural Resources and Emergency Management Committees.

The legislation would codify and expand the Wildfire County Coordinator Program, a proven partnership between CAL FIRE and CFSC that has supported local coordination, mitigation planning, funding access, and community wildfire resilience efforts statewide since 2021.

Through this program, Wildfire County Coordinators work across California to strengthen local collaboration, support mitigation efforts, connect partners and resources, and help communities take action to reduce wildfire risk.

To date, the program has helped secure more than $104 million for local wildfire mitigation and preparedness efforts statewide.

We’ve launched a new SB 973 webpage featuring legislative updates and additional resources on the statewide impact of the Wildfire County Coordinator Program.
