🌱 SCUFFF Community Update: Growth, Legacy & Love 🌱

This past year has been one of powerful growth for the Surry County United Food Forestry Foundation (SCUFFF).

On our 1.15-acre living model site, we continue expanding regenerative practices that demonstrate what food sovereignty can look like right here in Surry County. From hugelkultur mounds to pollinator gardens, protected wildlife habitat to our growing Humanitree orchard circle — the land is responding. The soil is softening. The biodiversity is increasing. The vision is becoming visible.

And today, we pause to honor the man who was the first to truly say, “This is possible.”

Chuck believed in this vision before it had form. Before the gardens were planted. Before the systems were built. He saw what we were building before we could fully articulate it ourselves. His steady presence and quiet faith in the work gave us courage.

Recently, Chuck’s family made a generous donation to our Village Library, helping us expand educational resources for regenerative agriculture, food forestry, and community resilience. Knowledge, like seeds, multiplies when shared — and this gift ensures that future generations will continue learning from this land.

We are also creating a Cat Sanctuary in Chuck’s honor — a peaceful, protected space within our village ecosystem to provide continued loving care for his beloved cats. It feels only fitting that the man who believed in sanctuary for the earth would have a sanctuary created in his name. 🐾🌿

Grief and gratitude walk hand in hand right now.
We are growing — not only plants, but legacy.

Chuck’s belief lives on in every tree planted, every child who learns here, every neighbor who steps onto this land and feels hope.

If you would like to support the continued expansion of our food forest, village library, or the creation of Chuck’s Cat Sanctuary, you can donate through our Linktree: linktr.ee/SCUFFF2025

We are building something that lasts.
For Surry.
For our children.
For generations.

With love and stewardship,
SCUFFF 🌳💚

Surry County lost a beloved community member this week.

C. Charles Smith, born 02/03/1049, passed away on Monday at Riverside Hospital in Newport News.

Chuck was a gentle soul, a steady presence, and a man who radiated love, peace, and quiet strength. His life touched many, and as first resident of Surry County to invest in the Surry County United Food Forestry Foundation, his legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.

In honor of Chuck and the life he lived, we are planning a sacred tree planting ceremony on Father’s Day to celebrate his life, his love, and the generations he continues to bless.

More details will be shared soon.

Please hold Chuck, his family, and all who love him in your prayers, thoughts, and hearts during this tender time.

With love and remembrance 💙

🎉🌱 Celebrating the Solar Return of Our Co-Founder, S. Love-Leigh Hughes! 🌱🎉

Today we celebrate the birthday of the woman whose vision, courage, and devotion brought the Surry County United Food Forestry Foundation (SCUFFF) to life.

This past year has been a profound season of expansion — not just for Love-Leigh personally, but for our entire community:

🌿 Our 1.15-acre living food forest model has flourished, proving what community-driven regenerative agriculture can look like in Surry County.
🌾 We began preparing for the 600-acre expansion, which will create a local, replicable model of food sovereignty for years to come.
🌻 New partnerships, alliances, and volunteers have risen, strengthening the foundation of everything we’re building together.
💛 We’ve continued serving families, empowering community members, and planting seeds — literally and figuratively — for the next 1,000 generations.

Love’s leadership this year has embodied the core of SCUFFF’s mission:
to nourish people, restore land, and build a resilient future for our community.

On her birthday, we honor her dedication, her heart, and her unwavering belief that Surry County can become part of a global model for local food systems across the nation.

Please join us in wishing her a beautiful, purpose-filled solar return! 🎂✨
Here’s to another year of growth, regeneration, and community transformation — both for our founder and for the land we steward together.

Happy Birthday, Love!!!💚🌱💛

🌍✨ This , we’re planting the future.

Imagine transforming 600 acres of land into a thriving food forest—a living ecosystem that feeds families, restores soil, protects pollinators, and teaches generations to live in harmony with the Earth. 🌳💚

Right now, the Surry County United Food Forestry Foundation (SCUFFF) stewards 1.15 acres of regenerative land. With your support, we can expand to 600 acres, creating a replicable model for converting large-scale agricultural practices into regenerative systems that every farmer in our county can easily repeat—bringing food sovereignty and resilience to our community. 🌾

Every seed, every hand, every heart matters. 🌱
Join us in investing in a New Earth—rooted in abundance, unity, and love.

🌿 End of Season Highlights from the Surry County United Food Forestry Foundation 🌿

As the seasons turn and the land settles into winter’s rest, we pause to reflect with gratitude on all that has blossomed this year here on Mount Ray. 🌎💚

This has been a year of growth, learning, and restoration as we continue transforming our 1.15-acre model site into a living classroom for regenerative organic agriculture and wildlife stewardship. Together, we are demonstrating what’s possible when community and creation work hand in hand.

✨ This Season’s Highlights ✨

🌸 Our Pollinator Garden burst to life with native wildflowers, creating a vibrant sanctuary for bees, butterflies, and other vital pollinators.

🦋 We expanded our Endangered Species Protection efforts, preserving critical habitat for native pollinators — including those most at risk right here in Virginia.

🌳 Our Humanitree Orchard and Food Forest Circle took root — a sacred living system designed to feed both people and planet for generations to come.

🌱 We built our first Hügelmounds, an ancient permaculture practice that nourishes the soil naturally and models sustainable food production.

🦉 Our site officially became a Protected Wildlife Habitat, offering safety and sanctuary for birds, deer, wildcats, opossums and other woodland beings who share this land with us.

🦊 We also supported Wildlife Rescue efforts, welcoming opportunities to care for wildlife that came to us and creating woodland habitats to give them the comforts of home.
Every seed planted, every habitat restored, and every heart connected brings us closer to our vision of a thriving, sustainable Surry.

💫 As we prepare for the coming year, we’re excited to share that a very special surprise is in the works for our community! 🌍
Mark your calendars — we’ll reveal the details this Christmas, just in time to inspire hope and renewal as we look toward Earth Day 2026. 🌎🎄
