It's time for your gardening tips!
Vegetables
March is a good time to plant warm-season vegetables such as artichokes, eggplants, peppers and tomatoes. Plant seed for lima beans and bush beans, corn, cucumber, melons (cantaloupe, muskmelon, watermelon), okra, peanuts, pumpkin, squash and sunflowers.
There is still time to plant seed for cool-season vegetables that will mature quickly, i.e., beets, carrots, mustard greens and radishes. Choose varieties that will be ready to pick in less than 45 days.
Harvest beets, carrots, onions and other root vegetables once they are large enough.
Herbs
Basil thrives in warm weather and can be grown from seeds or transplants. Transplant chives, marjoram, oregano, parsley and sage.
Mint can be planted as well, however, mint plants spread invasively by underground runners. Plant mint in a large plastic pot with the bottom removed (for drainage), Sink the pot up to the rim in your bed. The sides of the pot will prevent the roots from spreading.
Maintenance
Prepare garden soil for Spring planting. Add 2 to 4 inches of organic matter such as compost or mulch. Work into your soil and water deeply.
Adjust the watering schedule for longer and warmer days. Irrigate more frequently to the appropriate depth: one foot for vegetables is recommended.
