🌟 Frigid Frolics Concert Recap! 🌟
On a chilly March afternoon, the LSRS, Inc. gathered for an unforgettable Frigid Frolics concert at United Presbyterian Church in Superior. Despite the cold, the warmth of ragtime piano filled the room, and a small but passionate crowd of seventeen, including four talented pianists, came together to enjoy the music.
🎹 Tim Sandor kicked off the event with the LSRS’ theme song, Frigid Frolics by Alvin Marx. He followed it up with Joplin’s Pineapple Rag and a lively stride version of Nino Rota’s Love Theme from The Godfather.
🎶 Alexander Sandor then took the stage, starting with Ernesto Nazareth’s Odeon, a piece that echoed the Latin American flair of Joplin’s Pineapple Rag. He also performed Carolina Shout and Kitten on the Keys.
🎵 Ann Doberstein brought a touch of Missouri to the afternoon with Galen Wilkes’ Creeks of Missouri and Joplin’s Searchlight Rag.
🎼 Sandy Williams shared a personal favorite, performing By the Sea by George Posca, a piece from her freshman year of high school. She ended her set with Joplin’s Weeping Willow (1903).
🎹 Tim Sandor returned to play one of his go-to pieces, Roy Bargy’s Slipova’, before joining his sister Sandy for a heartfelt duet of Canadian Capers – their 5,000th performance of this piece (give or take a few! 😉).
🎶 Next up was Sandy Williams with a beautiful rendition of Cathy Craig’s Romantic Rag (1976), capturing the sentimentality of the piece.
🎵 Alexander Sandor returned for his final set, aiming to shine a spotlight on composers beyond Joplin. He performed Charles Hunter’s Cotton Bolls, Bix Beiderbecke’s In the Dark, and George Cobb’s Russian Rag.
🎼 To close the afternoon, Sandy and Ann joined forces once again to perform the delightful Bohemia by Joseph Lamb.
✨ A huge thank you to everyone who attended and shared their love of ragtime music with us! Our next event will be in Duluth on July 22nd at Wussow’s Concert Café at 6 PM. 🎶 If you play ragtime (piano or any other instrument), you're welcome to join in, and of course, everyone is invited to listen!
We hope to see you there – let’s keep the ragtime spirit alive! 🎹❤️
