WE GOT A WIN!

After a tremendous amount of public pressure, the Brule State Fish Hatchery will officially stay open!

This would not have happened without all of you. Your voices were loud, clear, and impossible to ignore. From emails and phone calls to conversations in the community, people across the south shore of Lake Superior stood up and made it known just how important this facility is to fishing enthusiast, to our outdoor heritage, and to our economy.

Because of that effort, the Brule State Fish Hatchery will remain open as it enters its 100th year of operation. Here’s to 100 more! Thank you to everyone who spoke up, shared your stories, and helped fight for the future of the hatchery. This victory belongs to you.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that make DCFGL great!

It’s National Volunteer Week and we give huge thanks to our approximately 2,800 Hunter Education Volunteer Instructors.

Thanks to their efforts, along with their desire to educate and their commitment to safety and their communities, Wisconsin has seen a 94% decrease in hunting incidents since the Hunter Education program began in 1967.

These incredible teachers provide exceptional safety education courses that foster passion, knowledge and lifelong skills for our hunters and future hunters.

National Volunteer Week is held each year in the third week of April. The week, part of the larger National Volunteer Month, recognizes, highlights and celebrates the profound impact that volunteer’s acts of service have on schools, organizations and communities.

Thank you!

On March 3, 1905, about 50 men met at Superior's Commercial Club for the purpose of organizing a "hunting and fishing society" which would provide the means of "protecting and propagating game and fish in northern Wisconsin." After discussion, it was decided to call the organization the Douglas County Fish and Game Protective League. Now known as the Douglas County Fish and Game League, the group, according to the "Duluth News-Tribune", is "the oldest of any broad-based conservation group in the Duluth-Superior area" and still remains dedicated to wildlife conservation. This photo was taken in 1937 when the League was helping plant trout in the Silver, Empire, Big and Little Balsam and State Line creeks. The two men in the picture are Jim McNaughton and Ben Winton.
