Superior Public Art - Spaces

Superior Public Art - Spaces Bridging Art with Commerce and Community. Superior Public Art Creating Community Environments – SPACES was formed in early 2009.

We are an active and engaged planning and working team of representatives from a broad section of the community including artists, cultural organizations, businesses, and city agencies. By us and through our working relationships with other community partners, our goal is to develop short and long-term art-based projects. These will lead to neighborhood and business revitalization, which will in t

urn, showcase Superior as a vibrant cultural destination. At this time, our two major initiatives are the Back Art Door Project which guides the community to alleys and back doors of businesses whose front entrances will have no access during Tower Avenue reconstruction 2013-2014, and Phantom Galleries Superior which brings all disciplines of the arts into our vacant storefronts. Both initiatives are equal partnerships with the Superior BID. Longer-term goals include ways to beautify all major highways coming into Superior, and expand upon the mural project started by the Douglas County Historical Society.

And a favorite of everyone, the Douglas County Historical Society mural of the Palace Theater, painted Brian Olson in 2009.

“The Palace Theater was built by famed Chicago theater designers C.W. and George Rapp in 1917. Throughout the country their exquisite theaters became places where anyone could spend a luxurious evening. George Rapp viewed his theaters as a ‘shrine to democracy, where the wealthy rub elbows with the poor and are much better for the contact.’ The Palace Theater was located on 11th and Tower Streets.”
