Created in 2011, Exploration Hannon is a hands-on, experiential math and science one to three day program held at Camp Hannon at Pinnacle Falls in Sunset, SC. Students learn how to explore a new plot of land to see if it is acceptable for human life. They collect data in the areas of reading the forest, uphill investigation, aquatic ecology, and stream mapping while learning about the environment.
All this, along with team building and a portable planetarium, make for a fun, educational experience. Designed for grades 3-8, this mountain ecology field study program moves math and science out of the classroom and into the great outdoors. The curriculum includes environmental education, data collection, team building and pure mountain fun. A optional zip line canopy tour and evening activities round out this unforgettable outdoor learning experience. Uphill Investigation - Explore the math and biology of forested slopes. Students search for and identify the flat areas of land and then compare findings with a sloped area of a mountain. Reading the Forest - This exploration to Pinnacle Falls allows students to explore the mountainous lands of the piedmont SC through trees, rocks and the encompassing landscape. Aquatic Ecology - Discover what makes up the water systems in the mountains, how the systems work, where streams come from and if they are healthy. Stream Mapping - Students investigate the nature of water and itโs movement. Evening Activities - fun team-building activities (with customizable options), night walks and campfire sessions. There are many outdoor adventure components that can be added to any visit: group games, 10 platform zip line and a waterfall hike. These components can help groups with communication, teamwork, group confidence as well as individual self-confidence.
