Monitoring:
EONS Monitoring Season: May through August
Commitment: 2 hours a week for a scheduled shift
Training: self-guided video and hands-on field training on your first shift
Location: 18000 Pacific Coast Hwy, Huntington Beach, CA 92648

Nest Site Work Days:
Restoration season: July through February
Commitment: All are welcome for any amount of time! Schedule: 8am-11am on the first Fridays and 3rd Saturdays of each month (July-Feb)
This nest site is a man-made “beach” habitat that needs to be maintained regularly to continue to provide the nesting habitat that they cannot access along our beaches. Staff and volunteers clear out plants that cover the “sandy beach” to improve the nesting success of the Least Terns and Snowy Plovers. For more information or to Volunteer

As you may have noticed, it’s been pretty quiet out at the nest site but don’t worry! The Least Terns are still nesting at Bolsa Chica this year! They have decided to nest at the 4 other nest sites on the Reserve that are not visible to the public. There are currently 48 active Least Tern Nests on the Reserve.

Volunteer Birders Needed for Fairview Park Bird Surveys.
The Sea & Sage Conservation Committee is launching a new series of bird surveys at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, starting in late February 2022. Three levels (tiers) of surveys will be conducted, all using eBird to collect all bird observations in 4 designated eBird Hotspots. The surveys will be conducted every month at least through February 2023.
We are conducting these surveys to provide quality data to the City of Costa Mesa about the birds that use Fairview Park and for Sea and Sage volunteers to use their birding skills to help protect birds, advance the use of eBird as a conservation tool and to have fun birding while we do it.
If you are interested in helping with this project, please see the article on our website.https://www.seaandsageaudubon.org/Conservation/FairviewParkSurveyInfo.pdf

The California Towhee (Melozone crissalis) has a nearly identical twin, the Canyon Towhee (Melozone fuscus). These two ground-foragers were even considered the same species, the Brown Towhee, until research on the mitochondrial DNA of the birds provided evidence to prove their status as separate species. The best way to tell them apart is by their location since their ranges essentially do not overlap. The California Towhee can be spotted year-round at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve.

London Rocket (Sisymbrium irio) is an invasive species of mustard not found at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, but at Harriett Wieder Regional Park. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy has been working in this park since 2016 with the goal of removing invasive species — like London Rocket — and installing appropriate native plants.

Doing so helps to create a suitable habitat for sensitive species like the California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila californica) and southern tarplant (Centromadia parryi ssp. australis).

Who is the powerful predator seen here? It’s the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)! The large eyes on the Great Horned Owl do not move in their sockets, yet this raptor can turn its head 180 degrees, allowing it to look in any direction. They are not commonly observed on the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, but with a keen eye you may be able to spot one blending in with the surrounding vegetation.
