When everything seemed impossible, Juanita found an opportunity to shine—a few months ago, the academic future of 8-year-old Juanita Keily Pérez Ramírez seemed fraught with obstacles. Since birth, this brave girl had faced various health issues that affected her development and learning. While other children progressed in school, she struggled daily to grasp lessons, retain information, and keep pace with her classmates.
Difficulties mounted during her first year of primary school. Ultimately, she failed to pass the school year, never having learned to read or write.
In February 2026, her parents arrived at the Local Hope Study Center clinging to a small hope: finding a place where their daughter would be understood, supported, and valued for her abilities. That was when Juanita joined the educational reinforcement program.
After four months of hard work and perseverance in the program, Juanita can now read and write. She arrives at class happy, participates enthusiastically, and has achieved excellent grades. What once seemed impossible now fills her family with pride, and they are deeply grateful for the guidance and support she received.

GREATNESS LEAVES A MARK - Some people enter our lives and leave a mark so deep that time can never erase it. People who, with a smile, a word of encouragement, or a lesson, have the power to change destinies. These people are teachers.
Every June 25th, Guatemala celebrates Teacher's Day, a date that also honors the memory of María Chinchilla, who gave her life defending the freedom and dignity of her people. Her legacy lives on in every educator who, with love, vocation, and dedication, devotes their days to shaping generations filled with hope.
This Teacher's Day, Local Hope congratulates those who turn knowledge into hope, challenges into opportunities, and dreams into achievable goals. Thank you for believing in your students, inspiring them to move forward, and leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. Your legacy lives on in every life you transform and in every future you help build.
Behind every child who learns to believe in themselves, every young person striving to reach their goals, and every professional transforming their community, there is a teacher who planted a seed of confidence and knowledge. They do not merely teach lessons; they teach how to dream, how to persevere, and how to discover strengths that often remained hidden.A lesson may last for a single class, but a great teacher imparts lessons that last a lifetime.

In San Martín, Guatemala, access to safe drinking water remains one of the community's most urgent needs. While the Local Hope/XelaAid complex serves as a hub for education, health, and community development, many families throughout the municipality continue to rely on untreated water sources that can pose serious health risks.
According to local environmental health officials, approximately 95% of the municipality's water systems provide untreated piped water that does not meet drinking water standards. Testing has identified contamination from bacteria such as E. coli and other harmful microorganisms that can cause illness.
To help address this challenge, Local Hope has distributed 355 water filters free of charge to families across the region. With proper maintenance, each filter can provide up to 10 years of safe water treatment, removing bacteria, protozoa, cysts, sediments, and other contaminants from household water supplies.
These simple but powerful filters are helping families reduce the risks associated with contaminated water, improve overall health, and gain greater confidence in the water they use every day. Clean water changes lives—and together, we are helping make it possible for communities throughout San Martín.

FERTILE FIELDS FOR FUTURE YIELDS - At the Local Hope/XelaAid complex in San Martín Sacatepéquez, Guatemala, we see firsthand how deeply agriculture is woven into community life. Farming is more than a livelihood here—it is a living tradition passed down through generations of Maya Mam families who continue to nurture both the land and their cultural heritage.
From an early age, children accompany their parents and grandparents into the fields, learning how to prepare the soil, select seeds, and care for crops with patience and dedication. These lessons connect them to ancestral knowledge that has sustained their community for centuries.
The fertile lands of San Martín produce a wide variety of vegetables that supply local and regional markets, supporting families and strengthening the local economy. Every harvest reflects the hard work, resilience, and commitment of farming families who respect nature's cycles while providing fresh food for countless households.
Despite challenges such as climate change and market uncertainties, the farmers of San Martín continue to cultivate the land with determination and hope. In every seed planted and every harvest gathered, they preserve a rich cultural legacy while helping build a stronger future for the next generation.
