NSCF Florida Chess Programs The National Scholastic Chess Foundation - inspiring academic excellence through chess.

The National Scholastic Chess Foundation (NSCF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization transforming education and inspiring excellence through the power of chess. With programs in over 100 schools and communities across New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and South Florida, our mission is to unlock students’ potential by developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and lifelong habits of lea

rning. We offer chess as an enrichment activity in after-school, as well as breakfast and lunchtime programs. We specialize in integrating chess curriculum into classrooms and offer tailored strategic support for educational partners. Through initiatives like the National Scholar Chess Player awards (co-sponsored alongside the US Chess Trust) and need-based scholarships, we are committed to recognizing and nurturing excellence—both in chess and academics. Our founder, FIDE Master Sunil Weeramantry, is a nationally acclaimed educator with more than 40 years of experience in championing scholastic chess programs. Our Executive Director, National Master Matan Prilleltensky, holds a Master’s in Teaching and is celebrated for coaching multiple national championship-winning teams and advancing curriculum development in chess education. Connect with us to bring the benefits of chess to your school, community, or organization—and join us in empowering young minds for a brighter future.

Our Back-to-Back Tournaments on May 16 and 17 with Coral Springs, Florida Government and City of Miami Beach Government Parks & Rec departments were a blast. We had the mayors come out to support our kids and they came with professional photographers! So we have 2 brand new image collections and short articles on our website: https://nscfchess.org/gallery-community-chess/
Check them out.

And remember: Open Play Chess is on all summer long in Miami Beach. On Sundays we're at Scott Rakow Youth Center from 10 am till 12 noon.

Scholastic chess has grown dramatically in the nearly 50 years since FM Sunil Weeramantry first began teaching the game — but not all growth is equal.

What many people don't realize is that the program Sunil founded at Hunter College Campus Schools in 1979 was a trailblazer. In the decades since, many wonderful programs have followed. But too many still miss what Sunil set out to do from the very beginning: teach chess in a way that builds the critical thinking skills and social-emotional learning competencies students carry with them for life.

That's what drives us here at the National Scholastic Chess Foundation. Every day, we work to follow in our founder's footsteps — replicating his methods so that every student truly succeeds, on and off the board.

So it was a deeply meaningful moment when the Hunter team took top team honors at the 2026 National Middle School (K-8) Championship — and FM Bryan Enming Lin put an exclamation point on it with a perfect 7/7 individual score.

Sunil will be the first to tell you that chess isn't about ratings and titles. It's about the skills students carry throughout their lives. But he'd have to admit — winning is pretty sweet too. 🏆

Congratulations to the Hunter team, to FM Bryan Enming Lin, and to every coach and student who embodies what this work is really about!

Heavy rains early morning kept some folks away but there were 83 brave players who made it to the Scott Rakow Youth Center for our first-ever Miami Beach Youth Chess Tournament. We had some very special guests: Mayor Steven Meiner and Commissioner Laura Dominguez got us started, and Elizabeth Tejada from the Florida Scholastic Chess League helped give out awards. We'll have some more photos from the city photographer soon, but these I particularly want to highlight. Once again we insisted on notation and reviewed how before the first round, so kids could have their games analyzed when they lost. Many were able to make improvements to their play in their very next game! Thanks to the City of Miami Beach Government Parks & Recreation Dept who sponsored this event and their staff who did such a marvelous job making everyone feel welcome.

We will have official photos next week, but wow what a finish we had for our King of Coral Springs tournament this afternoon. And we were honored to have Mayor Scott J. Brook from Coral Springs, Florida Government come and present our awards.

We're in the midst of our King of Coral Springs Tournament and what an amazing time. We have an awesome new home for chess: the community center at Kiwanis Park. And we have over 70 kids squeezed in to play in 2 sections of this fun unrated tournament. Thanks so very much to Coral Springs, Florida Government for their support. More photos later today!
