Ticking off the miles through Niles Canyon… A week and a half ago we shared a photo of some restoration work being done of Yosemite Valley Railroad Observation car #330 which continues to have its interior replicated. How about a little video of riding the rear platform of the 330 eastbound through Niles Canyon from a special trip a few years ago. A feel from a different time….

Working from the top down... We stopped in our car shop last Saturday to find primer on the roof of our Great Northern Ranch Car 'Hidden Lake' The Great Northern paint scheme is pretty complicated with multiple colors including a green roof which is where the painting work is getting underway. We look forward to seeing more color and more primer soon as the priming, painting, masking, painting, masking, ... continues.

Another great video from one of our long time members of steam action on our former Castro Point Railway that we operated before coming to Niles Canyon nearly 40 years ago.

On Saturday, we found the interior restoration crew of our Great Northern Ranch Car 'Hidden Lake' busy making additional measurements of the intricate floor pattern in the car. We have a source for the floor and they would like to precision cut it which means we need to give them accurate drawings. Of course, the flooring is not perfectly symmetrical around the center of the car so between graph paper taped to the floor, markings and measurements on the floor and more, drawings are well underway with checks undergoing now so we can get a new replica floor into the Hidden Lake. Donations to offset the cost of this floor are welcome. We will leave a link in the comments.

We were happy to support the Sunol Business Guild during their August 22, 2026 event, "A Stroll in Sunol: Pours, Picnics & Paws". We had our tent setup with our railroad in the background in the Sunol Gardens. The event was very well attended, and we got to talk to a lot of great people while supporting another of our local communities. Our yellow tent moves next to CuriOdyssey for their September 4th All Aboard Friday evening event. We hope to see some of you there!

At 99 years young, Robert Dollar Co. #3 is seen in Sunol today as our Steam Department took the locomotive out for a test run today after it received its annual inspection. All good and just needs a bath before it will pull our Hot August Night train next Saturday which is sold out. Want to ride behind steam this fall? We have ticket available for our Steam Sundays in October as Sundays in September are already sold out.

You never know what you might find operating in our Brightside yard during our volunteer work sessions. Last Saturday, we heard SP #1195 start up only to find it with hostler, Mason D., at the controls helping another group of volunteers position the museum's GE 65-ton locomotive over the drop pit to allow for better access for some brake linkage work. Interested in coming to see what may be operating and to lend a hand? Please visit our volunteer page on our website for all sorts of volunteer opportunities and drop us a comment or PM if you are interested in getting started. We have a new volunteer coordinator that is anxious to help you find just the right thing for you!

Fitting it up! Volunteer, Bruce B., continues to work on fitting up replacement steel patches around the windows of our Western Pacific Railroad coach #315. He was at it again last Saturday. When complete, the car will have had all of its window openings repaired and all new windows installed.
