"Kukur Tihar" is a special day during the Deepawali festival dedicated to honoring our bond with our furry companions. For the past 10 years, USA-Nepal Community Outreach Network - UNCON has celebrated this day through community service, supporting local animal shelters. This year, we successfully hosted events at the Richardson Animal Shelter and, for the second time, at Irving Animal Services. This year newly formed lions club in District 2-x1, Dallas Manakamana Lions Club, joined the hand with UNCON to take this special day to the next level. Together we collected 500$ (250$ each) worth of pet supplies to both the shelters. With your continued support, we hope to expand this tradition to even more shelters across DFW and beyond in the coming years. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this program. Let’s start planning for next year to elevate our efforts even further!

Thank you Richardson and Irving Animal Shelters for the opportunity.

Project Completion Announcement: Solid Waste Management Initiative at Dhaularagiri Multiple Campus

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of a solid waste management project jointly initiated by UNCON and Dhaularagiri Multiple Campus (DMC). This marks one of UNCON’s most ambitious and impactful environmental initiatives to date—and our first collaborative project with a leading academic institution.

The project aimed to assist the campus in effectively managing the solid waste generated on its premises. By applying the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R), the initiative has not only improved the cleanliness of the campus surroundings but also demonstrated how waste can be transformed into a valuable resource—organic fertilizer—while supporting broader municipal waste management and environmental conservation efforts.

This model project stands as a replicable example for institutions and communities across Nepal. Locals are now encouraged to visit the campus to observe how sustainable waste management can be implemented within their own sectors—both public and private. As a result, the campus environment is visibly cleaner, and the surrounding community is gradually recognizing the long-term benefits.

Building on this success, DMC plans to extend similar initiatives to nearby high schools, other campuses, and communities—furthering environmental awareness and inspiring action for sustainable waste practices.

This project would not have been possible without the leadership of Dr. Sudarshan Silwal, who assembled a dedicated team of professors, students, and staff. Their tireless efforts were instrumental in the successful ex*****on of the project. Thank you to the entire DMC team for your commitment to this noble endeavor.

UNCON is proud to have partnered in this meaningful project and remains committed to fostering environmental resilience through community-based solutions.

Project Background:

Solid waste management remains a pressing challenge in Nepal, driven by rapid urbanization and the absence of coherent policies. Dhaularagiri Multiple Campus, a respected academic institution, sought to address this issue through the 3R methodology. The project aimed to raise awareness among students, faculty, staff, and the local community about the harmful impacts of poor waste disposal on both ecosystems and public health.
The ultimate goal was to establish a replicable waste management model that could be adopted by local communities, including Baglung Municipality.
