It was such an honor to mobilize with global health leaders, practitioners, delegates, and philanthropists at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

As a founder of the global surgery movement and one of the first to move away from the fly-in model and prioritize local surgical training, we are excited about the emphasis on investing in local surgical leadership.

Represented by ReSurge President and CEO Claire Lachance, Chief Development Officer Joshua Korn, and Surgical Partner Dr. Rose Alenyo, we had a great conversation with the Uganda Ministry of Health delegation to explore how ReSurge can support local initiatives on surgical and anesthesia access.

We participated in a gathering of global surgery organizations at the G4 Alliance meeting and gathering organized by the Global Surgery Foundation. We also had the honor of connecting with the Executive Director of the G4 Alliance, Colin McIff; the former U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, Jimmy Kolker; and Medical Volunteer and Nurse Educator Katie Osborn.

Together, we're determined to continue scaling long-term access to local surgical care and training for low- and middle-income communities worldwide.

ReSurge joined the conversation at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, one of the world's most consequential gatherings on global health.

ReSurge President and CEO Claire Lachance and Chief Development Officer Joshua Korn were joined by Dr. Rose Alenyo, the first female plastic surgeon in East Africa, a leading reconstructive surgeon, and a ReSurge Surgical Partner whose work has transformed thousands of lives across Uganda 🇺🇬

Dr. Alenyo took the stage at the Global Surgery Foundation event entitled "What's Next for Philanthropy: Investing in Local Leaders for Impact," where she shared her expertise and made the case for patients in need of access to life-changing surgical care.

A special thank you to the Global Surgery Foundation for organizing and to everyone we got to participate with. Now, more than ever, it's important to strengthen partnerships in Global Health so we can continue to close the gap in access to care once and for all.

Big News 🏆 ReSurge's Closing the Gap campaign has won the 2026 Bronze Effie Award in the Nonprofit category — one of advertising's most coveted honors for real, measurable impact. Developed pro bono with Ogilvy Health and Papaya Films, and supported by donated billboard placements from Outfront Media, the campaign centered on real patients and burn survivors, including acid attack survivors and human rights advocates Muskan Khatun and Natalia Ponce de León, both recipients of the US Secretary of State's International Women of Courage Award. The campaign was recognized for its effectiveness in reaching and inspiring a wave of new supporters of ReSurge International's mission.

"This campaign took a misunderstood cause and reframed it through emotionally resonant storytelling. This is just the beginning."

— Anna Santos Chief Marketing Officer, ReSurge International

This award belongs to everyone who believed reconstructive surgery was worth fighting for, including you.

Today is Global Surgery Day 👩‍⚕️

Approximately 5 billion people worldwide—two-thirds of the global population—lack access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care. There is a gap. And, this gap results in millions of preventable deaths each year, with neglected surgical diseases claiming more lives than HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and injuries combined.

Today, you can help us close that gap. An incredible donor has stepped up to double every gift you make to expand access to reconstructive surgical care in Africa. On Global Surgery Day, help us close the gap in access to reconstructive surgical care by sharing, learning more about our work, or making a gift to double your impact: bit.ly/4u79F9O

Your support helps build lasting access to reconstructive surgical care for communities who need it most.

🇺🇬 All the way from Uganda, ReSurge Surgical Partner, Dr. Rose Alenyo, is with ReSurge at the World Health Assembly in Geneva with ReSurge President and CEO — for patients like Gloria.

Gloria was just an infant when a candle caught fire in the night and burned her leg. With no access to specialized care, the wound healed on its own, leaving a scar that locked her knee and took away her ability to walk freely, run, or play. She watched other children from the sidelines.

Dr. Rose Alenyo operated on Gloria's leg for free, helping her heal. Now there is a light in Gloria's step. She runs, plays soccer, jumps rope, and has returned to school, brighter, renewed, and filled with hope.

Watch this space as Dr. Alenyo, alongside ReSurge President & CEO Claire Lachance, and Chief Development Officer Joshua Korn, advocate for more patients like her to have access to life-changing care 🧡

While in high school, Jenny suffered a severe burn to her right hand. With no medical treatment available, scar tissue tightened her hand until she could no longer use it. Without the use of her hand, her future quietly closed in around her. For a young woman with everything ahead of her, it must have felt endless and overwhelming. Then she met Dr. Rose Alenyo, a ReSurge surgeon in Uganda, and that all changed.

This spring, our goal is to raise $100,000 to expand our work across Africa for patients like Jenny. A generous donor has made that goal more within reach than ever: every dollar you give between now and June 30 will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling your impact!

Reconstructive surgery doesn't simply repair tissue. It restores a person to themselves — it sends children back to school and returns adults to work. By supporting our work in Africa, you can be a light for patients like Jenny.

In partnership with the Global Surgery Foundation, we're excited to be at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, organized by the World Health Organization.

We'll be represented by ReSurge President and CEO, Claire Lachance, Chief Development Officer, Joshua Korn, and Surgical Partner, Dr. Rose Alenyo, visiting all the way from Uganda.

A Pioneering ReSurge Surgical Partner, Dr. Alenyo, is the Chair of the Training Division, Plastic and Burns Surgery at Makerere University and is a Reconstructive Surgeon at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, the first and largest national burn referral hospital in Uganda. As a surgeon-trainer, she is projected to transform the lives of over 400,000 people in her lifetime.

Today, too many people around the world still lack access to safe, timely, and affordable life-changing surgical care, including reconstructive surgery. We are excited to be a part of critical conversations focused on strengthening health systems and addressing major health challenges facing communities worldwide.

See you there!

This Month on National Nurses Month, we're honored to celebrate nurses like Ingrid Crocco, who has been volunteering as a nurse with ReSurge since 1995. She has gone on 37 surgical team trips, bringing life-changing surgical care to communities worldwide while training local medical professionals. For Ingrid, what began as a spontaneous opportunity grew into decades of transformative service...

"A memory that still moves me to tears happened about 20 years ago in Burma (now Myanmar). We treated a young girl who had been badly burned, with her neck fused to her chest so she couldn't lift her head. All she wanted, she told us, was to look up and see the moon.

She would only let me care for her. By the end of our two-week trip, she could lift her chin. It's the kind of experience that breaks your heart but is also the best thing ever.

All she wanted was to see the moon, something we take for granted. But we made that happen for her. That's what makes ReSurge's work so powerful. There are probably 20 other stories I could share that are equally moving."

This past Mother's Day weekend, we celebrated the ways mothers make reconstructive surgical care possible: whether it's traveling long distances to get their child the care they need, or spending long hours in the operating room caring for others while raising families of their own.

Earlier this year, Dr. Waruguru Wanjau, ReSurge PWRS Surgeon from Kenya, welcomed baby Nara into the world 🌸 To every mother in our community: we see you, we honor you, and we are endlessly grateful.

Congratulations again, Dr. Wanjau. And, welcome to the ReSurge community, Nara!
