💥STRIKE AVERTED WITH HISTORIC CONTRACT💥

On the eve of a potential strike, the bargaining teams of IFPTE Local 21 + MEF-AFSCME 101 have both reached tentative agreements with the City of San Jose, including historic investments in recruiting and retaining staff.

Highlights of the tentative agreements include:
💰 Historic wage increases: 6% in year one, 5% in year two, and 3.5-4% in year three
🍼 An increase from 1 to 8 weeks of paid family leave
✅ Reinvestment in public services

“As an expecting mother, I can say that this agreement finally meets the standard for paid family leave in the region, and raises the bar for all working families here in San Jose,” said Sarah Abroff, Associate Transportation Specialist.

"Staffing up our departments means ensuring city employees can afford to live and work in the city they serve. This tentative agreement is a major step in that direction," said Michael Jun, Housing Development Officer.

We reached these wins by staying united and building a credible strike threat. Thousands of members marched, shared their stories, voted yes to strike, and more. We want to thank all of our community allies for helping us Staff Up San Jose!

✅ The bargaining teams of both unions endorsed the three-year tentative agreement and have called off the scheduled August 15-17 strike.

🗳️ There will be a full summary shared this week, and information about how to vote on whether or not to ratify it the TA.

Even if you don’t live or work in San Jose, please consider contributing to the hardship fund to show that you stand by and support the City workers that provide services to San Jose residents everyday. I am a public servant in Sunnyvale, a resident in San Jose, and a labor leader in the South Bay. Join me in solidarity, and demand fair wages and a fair contract from our elected officials and City administrators. 💪🏽 ✊🏽

Kicking off our member highlight series is Shelsy Bass! “I think unions can support the fight to end racism and inequality because unions can mirror the environment that we would like to see. We work towards the common good.”
