👁️ The All-Seeing Eye, the Dollar Bill, and the Truth About Freemasonry 🔺
One of the most common questions Freemasons hear is:
“If Freemasonry doesn’t control the government, then why is there a Masonic eye on the dollar bill?”
The answer is simple: it isn’t a Masonic symbol on the dollar bill it is part of the Great Seal of the United States.
The Eye of Providence and unfinished pyramid appear on the reverse side of the Great Seal, which was officially adopted by Congress on June 20, 1782. The symbolism was intended to represent Divine Providence watching over the American experiment, while the unfinished pyramid symbolized strength, durability, and a nation still under construction.
What many people do not realize is that the Eye of Providence existed long before Freemasonry. For centuries it appeared in Christian churches, paintings, manuscripts, and religious art as a symbol of God’s watchful care over humanity. The eye enclosed within a triangle often represented the Holy Trinity and Divine Providence.
Ironically, the unfinished pyramid which many conspiracy theories claim is “Masonic” does not appear in traditional Masonic ritual, degrees, or official lodge symbolism. The historical explanation given when the seal was adopted stated that the pyramid represented “Strength and Duration,” while the eye above it represented Providence favoring the American cause.
Were some Founding Fathers Freemasons? Absolutely.
Men such as Brother George Washington and Brother Benjamin Franklin played important roles in the founding era. However, there is no evidence that Freemasonry as an institution designed the Great Seal, controlled its creation, or secretly placed hidden Masonic messages within it. The seal was the result of years of work by multiple committees, artists, and statesmen, both Masons and non-Masons alike.
As Freemasons, we understand that symbols often have meanings that extend far beyond any single organization. The Eye of Providence reminds us that our actions are always accountable to a higher power, a lesson shared by many faiths and traditions.
Perhaps the real mystery is not why the Eye appears on the dollar bill.
Perhaps the mystery is why so many people assume every eye belongs to Freemasonry.
Sometimes a symbol becomes mysterious not because of its origins, but because of the stories people attach to it.
