FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Nurturing the potential of every
child and teen. FOR HEALTHY LIVING
Improving the nation’s health
and well-being. FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Giving back and providing
support to our neighbors. The YMCA of Sumter was founded in 1890 by a group of men from the area churches. They met together on Sunday afternoons and conducted religious services on the upper floor of the Armory

Hall above the present day Brody’s on Main. In 1910, the lot at the corner of Liberty and Sumter was purchased and the first YMCA facility was erected and opened in 1911. The state of SC officially recognized The YMCA of Sumter with articles of incorporation on November 16, 1912. Our services today range from childcare to wellness and serve everyone from infants to seniors. The YMCA is a private non-profit, membership organization. By participating and volunteering in the YMCA, our members experience a sense of belonging to a movement that is dedicated to its mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
