Today is an important day for our district.

The school board will meet this afternoon at 4:00 PM at SFHS to discuss building use and grade configuration options that will shape decisions made later this month. This is a key moment in the process, and community attention still matters.

Superintendent Cunningham shared an important update this week about where the school board is in the process of deciding our district’s long-term building use and grade configuration. In plain terms: we are at a real turning point. The board is weighing several options for how our schools could be used in the coming years, while also working to protect the district’s financial stability and future.

This Monday’s school board meeting is a key moment. At this meeting, the board will publicly discuss these updated options, which have changed since before the holidays and now include additional scenarios. What is discussed Monday will directly shape the recommendation and the final decision expected later this month. Once that decision is made, it sets the path for building plans and for how our kids experience school day to day for years to come.

As parents and community members, our attention right now matters. This is one of the last opportunities to listen, ask questions, and make sure student and family needs across the entire district are fully considered. Engagement at this stage truly can influence the outcome.

👉 We strongly encourage parents, caregivers, and community members to attend the school board meeting this Monday, January 12, at 4:00 PM at SFHS, or to closely follow the discussion. These are decisions that affect our children, our towns, and our shared future. Being present matters.

District Update Overview: Community Update from 12/12/25

Earlier this week, Superintendent Cunningham shared a community update outlining several major items currently under discussion in the Sumner–Fredericksburg Community School District. This post is meant to provide a clear overview for families.

Why this update matters
The district is working to address approximately $800,000 in ongoing general fund savings. After reviewing multiple approaches, district leadership has indicated that maintaining all four buildings is not recommended due to significant impacts on staffing and student programming. As a result, the board is considering three-building configurations beginning in the 2026–27 school year.

The school board is expected to choose which option to pursue at the January 12, 2026 board meeting.

Three-Building Option A (Phased Approach)

2026–27 School Year
• Durant: PK–K (Sumner students)
• SFHS: 1st–4th (Sumner students) and 9th–12th (all district)
• FES: PK–4th (Fredericksburg students) + Future Frontiers Charter
• SFMS: 5th–8th (all district)

2027–28 and Beyond
• Durant: Closed
• SFHS: PK–4th (Sumner students) and 9th–12th (all district)
• FES: PK–4th (Fredericksburg students) + Future Frontiers Charter
• SFMS: 5th–8th (all district)

This option maintains community-based elementary schools while maintaining current upper grades model across the district.

Three-Building Option B (Single Elementary Location)

2026–27 and Beyond
• Durant: Closed
• SFHS: 7th–12th (all district)
• FES: PK–2nd (all district) + Future Frontiers Charter
• SFMS: 3rd–6th (all district)

Under this option, all elementary-aged students would attend school in Fredericksburg, with grade-level consolidation across buildings.

Future Frontiers Charter School Update

The update also shared that the Future Frontiers Charter School application has advanced to the final round at the state level. The founding group will present to the State Board of Education on January 15, 2026. If approved, planning would begin for a potential Fall 2026 launch. Additional FAQs and information are expected to be shared by the district as the process continues.

As these discussions move forward, families may wish to consider how each option impacts:
• Daily routines and transportation
• Age-appropriate learning environments
• Long-term district equity and sustainability

An Update on This Page

As the district continues important planning and decision-making, this page will be used to help share official district updates, school board notices, meeting dates, and major decisions that impact students and families across the Sumner–Fredericksburg district.

The goal is simple:
clear information, shared early, with a focus on kids first, transparency, and community understanding.

This page is community-run and not affiliated with the school district. It does not replace official district communications, but exists to help families stay informed and engaged as decisions are discussed and made.
