The Here and Now Project

The Here and Now Project The path toward recovery after a traumatic injury or life changing diagnosis can be a difficult jour

Becoming paralyzed is one of the most daunting life changes to adjust to. It is our hope that the Here and Now Project can help fill that void for people whose lives have been affected by paralysis by connecting them with others who have shared their struggles. In the darkest moments of our lives, what we need more than anything is that tiny sliver of light to see that we are not alone.

A huge shout-out to H&NP member and Paralympic gold medalist Megan Blunk for an incredible second annual Adaptive Sports and Recreation Camp!

Over three days, participants explored wheelchair basketball and soccer, adaptive baseball, quad rugby, arts and crafts, and much more. We caught the tail end of the final day, but the energy was still palpable as people wheeled across the campus, tried adaptive cycling with Outdoors for All Foundation, connected with BILLY Footwear, and enjoyed ice cream courtesy of I.screamery.

Way to go, Megan, for coordinating such a well-run event with an amazing team of volunteers, including several H&NP Peer Mentors! 🎉

A little to a day we’re still smiling about...

More than 400 people ran, walked, or rolled in Puyallup and across 16 states for this year’s 5K for Today: raising over $43,000 from more than 200 donors!

We’re also incredibly grateful to our presenting sponsor, C4 Database Management, and all of this year’s sponsors and local partners for helping bring the 5K for Today to life.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, fundraised, donated, volunteered or shared their miles from afar. Every bit of it makes year-round connection, peer mentorship, hospital outreach, and gatherings possible.

And a huge shoutout to Kathy Conzelman of Rainier Photography Club and Jesse Major for capturing the day so beautifully! Find the full gallery and look for some familiar faces on our RunSignup page: https://runsignup.com/Race/Photos/WA/Puyallup/5Kfortoday

Nearly 250 people ran, walked, and rolled with us at the 2026 5K For Today in Puyallup -and this is what the day looked like.

The 5K has never been only about completing a course. It’s about creating opportunities to exchange knowledge, build real friendships, and stay connected long after event day. We are incredibly proud of what this community continues to create together.

This year’s 5K has also unfolded alongside the devastating wildfires affecting Eastern Washington. After closely monitoring smoke and air quality, we have postponed the Spokane gathering originally scheduled for August 12. We’ll bring the Spokane 5K celebration into SCI Awareness Day on September 23, when we can hopefully gather under much clearer skies.

The virtual 5K continues through August 16, with participants running, walking, and rolling across sixteen states. The Wenatchee SCI Meet Up is still planned for August 15, and we’ll continue monitoring local conditions closely.

To everyone who participated, volunteered, fundraised, donated, sponsored, cheered, or worked behind the scenes: thank you for making this day and this community what it is.

Wherever you complete your 5K, tag us so we can follow along!

TOMORROW'S THE DAY!!

These photos feature just a handful of the longtime advocates, partners, and friends who have joined us at past 5K for Todays —and will be back with us in Puyallup tomorrow!

Their partnership helps connect people with spinal cord injuries or mobility disabilities with valuable resources, relationships, and opportunities throughout our community.

Be sure to visit their booths, meet the people behind the organizations, and learn more about the work they do.

We’re grateful to every sponsor who has invested in the H&NP community and helped make this year’s 5K For Today possible.

See you tomorrow afternoon, Puyallup! Let’s run, walk, and roll 💙

And we’re not finished yet.

The 5K For Today begins in just TWO DAYS! There’s still time to join a team, rally your people, or give your fundraiser one final push before we run, walk, and roll together.

Before we reach the starting line this Sunday, we’re recognizing the generous support of our 2026 Presenting Sponsor, C4 Database Management.

Founded by H&NP cofounding member Todd Stabelfeldt, C4 provides specialized database management and computer systems consulting to healthcare laboratories, hospitals, and government agencies.

For the past few decades, Todd has brought his perspective as a person with a spinal cord injury to his work as an entrepreneur, accessibility advocate, peer mentor, and longtime member of this community.

Thank you to Todd and the entire C4 team for making this year’s 5K For Today possible. Your generosity strengthens the H&NP community all year long, creating more opportunities for people with spinal cord injuries and mobility disabilities to connect, find resources, and feel welcome here.

We’re deeply grateful to have you beside us!

When hundreds of people run, walk, and roll in this year’s 5K For Today, they’ll carry a piece of Jack “Spike” Spiker’s legacy with them.

For years, Spike created the artwork that gave our 5K its visual identity. After his stroke, his wife, Dawn, supported him as he adapted his creative process and continued making art. Over the years, Spike and Dawn became cherished members of The Here and Now Project community.

Earlier this year, we lost Spike. As our seventh annual 5K approaches, we’re celebrating the life behind the logos, the gifts he shared, and the love and encouragement that surrounded him.

Read “More Than a Logo: Remembering Spike’s Creative Legacy” on our blog here: https://www.hereandnowproject.org/post/more-than-a-logo-remembering-spike-s-creative-legacy

The 5K For Today is less than two weeks away. This year, it will also bring us together in Spike’s artwork, celebrating the spirit he captured through it: possibility, connection, joy, and care for one another.

Every registration supports the peer mentorship, outreach, resources, and gatherings that connect people living with spinal cord injuries and mobility disabilities.
