The Here and Now Project

The Here and Now Project The path toward recovery after a traumatic injury or life changing diagnosis can be a difficult jour

Becoming paralyzed is one of the most daunting life changes to adjust to. It is our hope that the Here and Now Project can help fill that void for people whose lives have been affected by paralysis by connecting them with others who have shared their struggles. In the darkest moments of our lives, what we need more than anything is that tiny sliver of light to see that we are not alone.

Last week, we got the chance to shoot over the mountains for a quick stop in Spokane to do some outreach alongside Outdoors for All, Inland NW Vets, and Providence St. Luke’s Rehab Hospital.

The adaptive cycling event brought together folks of all abilities to try out a wide range of adaptive cycles, spend time outside, and make new connections in the region.

The next day, we toured Saint Luke’s inpatient and outpatient rehab units and even had the chance to squeeze in a bit of peer support with a newly injured individual while we were there.

Huge thanks to Candice Belcourt and Kim Clark at St. Luke’s for the warm welcome and for helping lay the groundwork for a shared vision of stronger connection and peer relationships for people with spinal cord injuries and other mobility disabilities across Washington.

More gatherings on that side of the state are ahead this summer! 💛

T-4 DAYS left to RSVP. And this weekend is a full one.

Saturday's Peer Connection Summit** is for survivors and supporters: Starting with a welcome lunch and keynote, moving into small group ice breakers and breakout conversations that don't always fit into everyday life, and closing out with the Adaptive Car Show (open to the public!), a hot dog truck, and giveaways.

**For families, we'll have a dedicated kids' space with a licensed childcare provider available throughout the day so you can participate fully.

Sunday's Resource Expo opens to everyone: Nonprofit partners from across the region, adaptive sports demos and experiences (hand cycling, wheelchair rugby, basketball, powerchair soccer, dance, yoga, and more) plus technology, resources, and participant giveaways to close it out.

And if you want a preview before Meetup weekend, Jessie recently launched her podcast, Powering Through with Jessie Owen (and Kenny was her very first guest!) 🎧

We can’t wait to welcome Jessie and gather together for a weekend of community and resource sharing.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our activation space and spent time learning more about our community.

Throughout the night, we connected with new faces and teamed up with for a power soccer demonstration in the concourse ⚽️

We’re especially grateful to for making it possible for 54 members of our community to be part of such a memorable night: from attendees in the stands to volunteers, players, and staff across the stadium.

May is , and we're taking a moment to shout out one of our favorite partners, United Access!

United Access helps people find the right wheelchair accessible vehicle for their life. They offer a wide range of new and used options, rear- and side-entry vans, driving aids and more, all backed by Mobility Specialists who actually take the time to get to know you and your needs.

Their motto is "Go Forward. Together." We love that. It's exactly how we think about community here too.

Thank you United Access for being part of the Here and Now family.

GiveBig happens once a year. Today is the day Washington shows up for its neighbors.

In 2025 alone we held 159 meetings, trained 13 new peer mentors, delivered 91 care packs, and reached 115 newly injured individuals across Washington. Our 21 peer mentors bring a combined 481 years of lived experience — and none of it reaches the people who need it without community support.

GiveBig is how we fund the next 115.

This year, we’re highlighting real voices from across our community: people with lifelong disabilities, those adjusting to life after injury, and the many journeys in between.

Their stories reflect what connection, belonging, advocacy, and peer support can mean at every stage.

We hope you’ll take a moment to explore the page, hear their experiences, and support the work that helps this community continue to grow: https://www.wagives.org/organization/hereandnowproject

It was a beautiful day today for the UW SCI Summit - Unlimited Play with a bunch of familiar faces and organizations. The Northwest Regional Spinal Cord Injury System’s biannual event featured fencing, dancing, gaming, art, bird watching, frisbee, RC racing and more! Thanks for having us!

Shoutout to our friends at Vertical Therapy, LLC : Our 2025 Silver Annual Sponsor, who we're beyond grateful to have them in our corner year after year.

Vertical Therapy provides in-home, mobile exercise therapy for people living with paralysis across the Greater Puget Sound, meeting clients where they are to build strength, independence, and get back to the things that matter most to them. Real work, done with real heart. The work they do aligns deeply with what we're about here at Here and Now Project.

Thank you for continuing to show up for this community. This plaque is just a small token of our appreciation; the real gift is your partnership.
