Every moment matters at camp.
We see kids go through so many levels of emotions when they come to camp for the first time. They arrive nervous, scared, unsure of the unknown. Walls up, defenses on high. During these moments they are looking for something to ease their distress. These moments matter.
As the hours and days continue, they are looking for moments when they feel like they matter. No matter what they talk about, we all listen and show interest. We ask questions, we are not distracted. These moments matter.
When Thursday comes and they realize they will go home tomorrow, their emotions shift to testing, walls going back up, defenses high. They want moments when they can feel safe to break down and experience comfort. These moments matter.
Friday comes with sadness, anger, and sometimes excitement for those graduating. They are looking for reassurance, that when they go back home, they will be ok. We've taught them that they are loved by God, that they matter, they are worthy. These moments matter.
After camp when we are going about our lives, we may run into one of these campers. They are filled with excitement! When they return to camp the next year, they are filled with excitement, hope, and joy. These emotions are possible because we made it a priority to Make Every Moment Matter!
