Looking for something to do and a good excuse to go for a drive?
Iowa has a volunteer program where your only job is to drive around at night and listen for frogs. No, really. 🐸
Every spring and summer, trained volunteers across Iowa drive designated routes after dark, with windows open, identifying Iowa's 16 frog and toad species purely by sound.
It's critically important work. Since 1991, over 600 volunteers have surveyed 2,371 sites across 96 counties in Iowa, building one of the largest long-term amphibian datasets in the country. Frogs and toads are sensitive indicators of wetland health, and without volunteers tracking them, we simply wouldn't know how they're doing.
The time commitment? Six to eight hours for the entire season. Learn more and sign up at iowadnr.gov.
