High School and Middle School Students Mentor LMES Students Through Agricultural Education Initiative

High school and middle school agricultural education students recently partnered to mentor students at LMES through a project initiated by Erin Smith, LMES teacher, as part of an ongoing initiative designed to strengthen connections across the agricultural education pathway.

During the visit, both high school horticulture students and middle school students worked directly with LMES students, providing guidance, support, and hands-on learning experiences related to horticulture and agricultural education. The collaboration allowed older students, under the direction of Dr. Yarbrough, CHS advisor, to develop leadership skills while introducing younger students to agricultural opportunities.

As LMES serves as a feeder school to SMS, LMES students also had the opportunity to meet Ms. Carmon, the agricultural educator at SMS, who will continue their agricultural education there. This interaction helped students begin building relationships and become more familiar with their next step.

The mentor project promotes collaboration across grade levels and supports a smooth academic transition into middle and high school agricultural programs. It also reflects a strong commitment to developing leadership, career readiness, and technical skills through agricultural education.

We also want to say a big thank you to Taco Bell and crew for continuing to feed our volunteers with this project. Blake Chira Sr. Thank You!

Today, our students participated in the Day of Service Challenge inspired by Georgia’s 2026 Teacher of the Year, Rachel Kinsaul, whose vision encourages students to connect learning with meaningful service in their communities.

As part of this effort, we visited our local animal shelter where students presented a donation check, helped move supplies like laundry detergent and pet food, and spent time playing with the dogs. Students had the opportunity to hear from Charlie Long, Animal Control Director, who shared insight into the daily operations of the shelter and the important work being done to care for these animals.

Through our school-wide Penny War fundraiser—along with support from CHS, SMS, and Menlo our students raised an incredible $1,996.14 to help purchase 14 new beds for the shelters 22 kennels. We are excited to see the new red and black beds that will be provided thanks to our students’ generosity!

FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

We are still looking for a few more members, if anyone is interested in poultry judging.
