There are no paid officers on the board and the board members are current CDL holding professional drivers. The general fund is used to purchase transportation, food and hotel rooms for stranded drivers. We also use the funds for the last ride home. We use several different ways to verify the information given to us for those that are asking for assistance.

A Truck driver with PTSD fell into a hole and couldn’t get out. When the boss walked by, the Trucker called out for help, but boss yelled back, "Suck it up, dig deep, and drive on," then threw down a shovel. The Trucker followed directions and dug that hole deeper.

A mechanic went by and the Trucker cried out for help again. The mechanic said, "use the tools and online training that has been given to you", then threw down a bucket. The Trucker used the tools and he dug the hole deeper still and filled the bucket.

A psychiatrist walked by. The Trucker called, “Help! I can’t get out!”, so the psychiatrist tossed down some drugs and said, "Take this. It will relieve the pain and you will forget about the hole.” The Trucker said, "thanks", and followed his advice, but when the pills ran out he was still in the hole.

A well-known psychologist rode by and heard the Trucker’s cries for help. He stopped and asked, “How did you get there? Were you born there? Did your parents put you there? Tell me about yourself, it will alleviate your sense of loneliness.” So the Trucker talked with him for an hour, then the psychologist had to leave, but he said he’d be back next week. The Trucker thanked him, but was still in the hole.

Another Trucker, happened to be passing by. The trucker with PTSD cried out, “Hey, help me. I’m stuck in this hole!” and right away the other Trucker jumped down into the hole. The Trucker with PTSD started to panic and said, “What are you doing? Now we’re both stuck down here!” But the other Trucker just smiled and replied, “It’s okay. I’ve been here before..... I know how to get out.”

“While much of the aftermath of the I-95 shutdown in Virginia has resulted in finger pointing and questioning of the state government’s response to the many stranded on the freezing freeway, a heartwarming story of a bread company’s compassion and generosity has surfaced from a grateful couple’s heartfelt thank you.

Casey Holihan Noe and her husband, John Noe, were headed from Elliott City, MD to Newport, NC when they became stuck at mile marker 148 in the long line of halted vehicles. The couple had been making a final visit to family before preparing to moving to Germany where John, who is currently in the Air Force, will be stationed for the next four years.

In addition to lovely family memories, the foreign-bound couple were soon to share some less pleasant memories with the many tired travelers waiting for rescue. Like many others, the Noe’s were forced to sleep in their car overnight, braving the chilly temperatures and only running their engine for short amounts of time to preserve their fuel.

“After almost 21 hours of being stuck on 95 South, sleeping here over night, not having access to food or water, and all of the nearest towns being out of power, we were tired, frustrated, and hungry,” shares Casey.

The couple had spied a baking company’s delivery truck stuck nearby, and as the hours stretched on, the two became more and more desperate for something to eat. Doubtful they would receive any kind of response, but encouraged by the grumbling of their empty stomachs, they dialed Schmidt Baking Company’s customer service line.

We didn’t think it would actually work,” admits Casey, “but less then 20 minutes later we got an incredible surprise.”

One of the owners of Schmidt Baking Company, Chuck Paterakis, personally called them with some heaven-sent news. He had contacted the truck driver, Ron Hill, and would be having him open the rig and share the loaves of bread with the hungry motorists.

The owner was thrilled to be able to help and grateful the couple had contacted the company. Once the truck doors were open, Ron received assistance in distributing the baked goods to more than 50 cars. The Noe’s shared that many of those stranded on I-95 had young children, were elderly, or had pets with them, and now after nearly an entire day of no food, they were finally able to eat something.

Casey took to Facebook to give an “incredible thank you” to Schmidt Baking Company for their “humanity and compassion” toward the hungry passengers. “We were all incredibly thankful. This was one of the moments I have ever witnessed.”

Being a truck driver is not easy.
Being married to a truck driver is not easy.
Having a truck driver as a parent is not easy.
Not only do our truckers sacrifice a lot, but for their families, it takes a lot of strength and making sacrifices too.
This is a letter that my husband woke up to this morning from our son.
He has to sacrifice spending time with his dad so that YOUR family, can have what they need. After all, it takes a special person to risk so much for people who care so little.
So next time you see a trucker, show a little kindness.
