Hatchery steelhead season extended on Salmon Creek (Clark County)

Action: Opens angling for and retention of hatchery steelhead.

Effective date: March 16 through May 27, 2022

Species affected: Hatchery steelhead

Location: Salmon Creek (Clark County): From the mouth to the 182nd Avenue Bridge.

Rule: Daily limit three. Selective gear rules in effect, except use of barbed hooks is allowed. Release wild steelhead.

Reason for action: Changes to the Salmon Creek hatchery steelhead program, resulting from the Mitchell Act Biological Opinion, have resulted in the replacement of early returning winter steelhead stocks with local stocks that exhibit a somewhat later run timing. This rule opens hatchery steelhead fishing during the timeframe outlined above and provides anglers with additional time to harvest these fish from Salmon Creek.

Additional information: Salmon Creek will return to permanent rules on May 28, 2022.

Information contact: Matt Gardner, District Fish Biologist, (360) 906-6746.

Adult salmon daily limit reduced on the Klickitat River

Action: Reduces the adult salmon portion of the salmon and hatchery steelhead daily limit to 1 fish.

Locations, Effective dates, and rules:

From the mouth (Burlington Northern Railroad Bridge) to Fisher Hill Bridge:
Apr. 1 through May 27: Salmon and hatchery steelhead: Open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays only. Daily limit 2, of which up to 1 may be an adult salmon. Release wild Chinook and wild steelhead.
May 28, 2022, until further notice: Salmon: Daily limit 6, of which up to 1 may be an adult. Release wild Chinook.
From 400 feet upstream of #5 fishway to boundary markers below Klickitat Salmon Hatchery:
Effective May 28, 2022, until further notice: Salmon: Daily limit 6, of which up to 1 may be an adult. Release wild Chinook.
Species affected: Salmon.

Reason for action: An estimated 1,800 adult spring Chinook are forecast to return to the Klickitat River in 2022. The adult salmon daily limit is being reduced to ensure that hatchery Chinook broodstock goals are achieved. Reducing the adult salmon daily limit will provide continued opportunity for anglers to harvest Spring Chinook and help ensure future hatchery returns.

Additional information: Anglers are reminded to check the Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for other areas and dates when the Klickitat River is open for salmon retention. WDFW will continue to monitor the spring Chinook return with Co-Managers to determine whether additional fishery modification is needed.

Information contact: Matt Gardner, District Fish Biologist, 360-906-6746.

Adult salmon daily limit reduced in the Wind River

Action: Reduces the adult Chinook daily limit to 1.

Effective date: March 16, 2022, until further notice.

Species affected: Salmon and hatchery steelhead.

Location: Wind River: From the mouth to 800 yards downstream of Carson National Fish Hatchery. The mouth of the Wind River is defined by the buoy line markers south of the Highway 14 bridge.

Rule: Daily limit 6. Up to 1 adult salmon and 1 hatchery steelhead or up to 2 hatchery steelhead may be retained. Release all salmon other than hatchery Chinook. Release wild steelhead.

Reason for action: The preseason forecast of spring Chinook returning to the Wind River (4,200 adults) indicates that a reduced adult salmon daily limit is needed to provide spring Chinook angling opportunity and meet broodstock collection goals at Carson National Fish Hatchery.

Additional information: WDFW will continue to monitor spring Chinook returns with Co-managers and National Fish Hatchery staff to determine whether further fishery modification is needed. All other permanent rules and ‘Closed Waters’ areas remain in effect; please refer to the Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet for additional information.

Information contact: Matt Gardner, District Fish Biologist, 360-906-6
