🟢 Air Quality Update for Southwest Louisiana: Today’s PM2.5 readings across Sulphur, Westlake, and Lake Charles are currently in the green “Good” range, with most local monitors showing low particle pollution levels.

Cleaner air days matter for our families, children, seniors, and local wildlife too. Healthy air helps protect pollinators, wetlands, and the ecosystems that support Southwest Louisiana communities.

💬 "You do not need to be a scientist, attorney, or expert to submit a public comment. Personal experiences with flooding, pollution, drainage issues, odors, industrial activity, or environmental concerns matter and help strengthen the public record."

As Executive Director of Micah 6:8 Mission, I encourage residents to participate in this process. Southwest Louisiana communities already face cumulative industrial impacts, and residents deserve meaningful environmental review and protections that prioritize public health, waterways, wetlands, and future generations.

— Elder Cynthia Robertson
Executive Director, Micah 6:8 Mission

*There has also been some confusion regarding the public hearing schedule. The official public notice states that written comments must be received by 4:30 PM on June 9, 2026, while the public hearing is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM that evening at the West Cal Arena & Events Center. We encourage residents to submit comments early and attend the hearing if possible. Your voice matters, and public participation is an important part of the permitting process.

🟡 Air Quality Update – Southwest Louisiana: Air quality remains in the Moderate range across most local monitors today. Current PM2.5 readings range from 41–56, with the highest readings near Mossville and Westlake. While conditions are not unhealthy, Moderate air quality can still affect sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with asthma or respiratory conditions.

⚠️ Only 5 Days Left to Submit Comments: The Chemical Waste Management Lake Charles hazardous waste permit renewal is currently under review, and community members still have time to make their voices heard. Hazardous waste facilities play an important role in managing industrial waste, but residents also deserve transparency, strong environmental oversight, and confidence that groundwater, wetlands, and surrounding communities are protected.

Questions many residents are asking include:
• How are hazardous waste facilities protected during hurricanes and flooding?
• What safeguards are in place to protect groundwater and nearby waterways?
• How is long-term environmental monitoring conducted?
• What measures help prevent contamination and accidental releases?
Public participation is an important part of the permitting process.
