POV: You’re just a couple of bros trying to save the environment😎🌎

No capes. No superpowers. Just a trash bag and a commitment to protecting Sullivan’s Island’s Maritime Forest.

Next time you’re out enjoying the island, pick up a few pieces of litter. The forest, wildlife, and future generations will thank you!🌴

The "Soulful Celebration" at Fort Moultrie was a big hit, thanks to Friends of Charleston National Parks and Grammy Winning Charlton Singleton, who performed dozens of R&B hits that had the crowd on its feet dancing all night. The Friends of Charleston National Parks is a fellow nonprofit dedicated to a mission of "protecting Charleston's past and present." The Friends support programs and enhancements for the several national parks in our area including Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island.

Meet Your Garden’s Night Shift Manager 🌙🐾

While we’re sleeping, these misunderstood marsupials are working overtime to keep our ecosystems balanced. Here is why you want them around—and how to plant a "welcome mat" for them:

The Opossum’s Favorite Menu 🍽️🌿

If you want to support local wildlife, plant these native powerhouses:

Simpson’s Stopper (Myrcianthes fragrans): These fragrant, orange-red berries are a high-energy snack. The dense evergreen foliage also provides the perfect "daytime nap" spot to hide from predators. 🧡

American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana): These vibrant purple clusters are packed with moisture and essential nutrients that stay on the branch into the cooler months. 💜

Wild Muscadine (Vitis rotundifolia): High in antioxidants and sugar, these thick-skinned grapes are a gourmet treat that keeps opossums fueled for their nightly rounds. 🍇

American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana): Often called "the candy of the woods," these sweet, soft fruits are the ultimate autumn feast for a hungry opossum. 🧡

How they benefit US:

Tick Terminators: A single opossum can eat up to 5,000 ticks in one season. They are nature’s vacuum cleaners! 🐜🚫

Snake Safety: They are naturally immune to most snake venom (like copperheads and rattlesnakes) and help keep those populations in check. 🐍

Disease Resistant: Because their body temperature is naturally low (around 95°F), it is nearly impossible for them to carry or transmit rabies. 🧼

How we benefit THEM:

By planting native species like the ones above, we provide them with a natural, seasonal diet that keeps them healthy and out of our trash cans!

Next time you see a "grin" in the moonlight, remember: they aren't scary—they're just the cleaning crew. Stop by the nursery this week to pick up some Simpson's Stopper or Beautyberry and start your own backyard sanctuary. 🏡✨

Even though the maritime forest feels quiet this time of year, something wonderful is waiting just beneath the surface.

Found naturally throughout our coastal forests and dunes, Spotted Bee Balm is beautifully adapted to Sullivan’s Island’s sandy soils, salt air, and sunny spaces. Its whimsical, speckled blooms and soft pink-lavender bracts are a showstopper when in flower — and a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators.

Plant it now, let the roots settle in during the cooler months, and you’ll be rewarded with a vibrant, pollinator-friendly display in late summer and early fall. Adding natives like Spotted Bee Balm to your garden not only brings natural beauty home — it helps keep our island ecosystem thriving. 🌿🐝

We are thrilled to celebrate this incredible conservation win by Lowcountry Land Trust!

The permanent protection of Oscar’s Place — nearly 50 acres on Johns Island — ensures that this beautiful property will remain undeveloped forever. With more than 1,100 feet along River Road and neighboring Johns Island County Park and Mullet Hall Equestrian Center, this conservation success protects the grand live oaks and iconic canopy that define the character of Johns Island.

As a nonprofit dedicated to preserving Sullivan’s Island’s 150-acre maritime forest — our natural defense against storms and sea level rise — we are always encouraged to see other Lowcountry landscapes safeguarded for future generations. Every protected acre strengthens the ecological resilience of our region.

Thank you to the Meyer family, the Charleston County Greenbelt Program, and the South Carolina Conservation Bank for making this possible.

Conservation is a long game — and wins like this remind us why the work matters. 🌿

Lowcountry Land Trust is proud to announce the permanent protection of Oscar’s Place, a nearly 50-acre property on Johns Island that ensures the land will remain undeveloped forever.
