This is unfortunately our current reality. LHYC does not get automatic funding like the schools or state social service programs and we donโt charge our families. We have survived since 2017 because weโve had a diverse funding stream. It has been a combination of our community supporters, grants, and fundraisers. This year, everything is more expensive, our Sullivan location is seeing more kids than we ever have, our 2 fundraisers weโve had so far this year have not produced what they have in years past, and the grant funding that weโve had is all gone. Grants do not last forever and are typically for very specific program costs, not typically sustaining or operational funding. With that said, we have 6 grants that we have applied for but with the current state of our government, nothing is moving forward. It is all just sitting there pending or under review. These are grants that we should have heard from 6-9 months ago. Just sitting there.
It is this perfect storm that has brought the terribly hard decision to close our Cuba center to reality. The Cuba LHYC cannot sustain itself financially, and keeping it open has steadily drained the funds that keep our Sullivan Center running. Stepping back from those kids is not something we do lightly, but if we donโt protect Sullivan, we risk losing both.
This is also a reminder that when you see us hosting an event or seeking sustainers (monthly givers), it isnโt a money grab. Your support really is make it or break it for us and our ability to serve these kids.
